Alrighty, i am at the point now where i need to start planning and purchasing audio components. I am planning of components in the kick panels, the dash speaker, the two behind the back seat, and maybe two in the custom built console and maybe a few extra tweeters here and there. I guess i should have mentioned earlier that I have a 1968 coupe. Also, i like bass but not in excess, i was thinking maybe two tens or eights in the trunk. As far as head units go, DVD/TV/iPod is most prefered, probably a Valor or a Jensen. So i just have a few questions.
How many amps should i get?
What all is involved with installing a DVD head unit in a classic?
Are there any equations i need to know for when it comes time to build my sub box?
Any specialty tools i need?
What speakers do ya'll recommend?
If you haven't figured it out yet, i am planning on doing this myself, and as always I can just splurge on all this top of the line audio equipemnt, as much as i would like to. I don't mind spending money in the right spots as long as i know that those components will last. Your help, opinions, and advice are very welcome. Thanks!:SNSign:

A lot of it depends o what kind of money you want to spend...Number of amps depends on how much space you have to work with, how much power you want, and how many speakers your going to run. You could go with a 5 ch( 4 ch for the car speakers and 5th for the subs or run a highs amp and a separate lows amp. The dvd head unit should be able to go right were the factory unit is and if you do that Id recomend a flip out screen dvd player but if you can afford it I would go with something better than a Jenson unit. Building the sub box is were the experience comes in if you want it to sound as best as it can because you have to determine how much air space the subs need, if your going to do a sealed box(less difficult) for more accurate and a tighter bass response or a ported box(more difficult) for louder looser bass, the speaker displacement also needs to be added to the enclosure size. If you dont have any experience doing this and dont know how, just have a local shop make you a simple one. As for tools, typical install tools and a few specialty ones like wire strippers, wire crimpers, all the connectors.
Speakers are another, how much you want to spend... Im running top of the line Boston Acoustics z6's( they run about $700-900/set) in my mustang with a 600 watt xtant amp powering them and boston acoustics sl95's($180) in my rear deck powered by a separate 4 ch xtant amp and 2 xtant 12's running off a 1000 watt xtant amp... Of course I would reccoment boston acoustics but Iv always liked to bass response from them, also focal, alpine type x, cdt's, rainbow, morel... theres a lot of real good brands, these are just a few of the better ones in my opinon.
Hope this helps.

allow me to be more specific. I can spend no more than $800 on the system, but many parts i can get for wholesale price at a local shop. I don't like the droned out sound that occurs when too much bass is present. I like it loud and clear. I have all the space in my trunk, which i imagine is more than enough. I know Jenson is not the greatest but my friends has one and hasn't had any problems yet. are valor and jenson relatively the same?

When I had only 800 to spend on my last system for my exploder I bought

Alpine 9805 Headunit
Alpine Type-R 6x9's (4)
Kenwood 1200.1 AMP (e-bay w/ warranty)
JL Audio w0's 12 (2)
Made the box myself and all rockford wiring.

Sounded good in the exploder but they are a driving sub box. Was enough to let me enjoy the music.. loud.:nice:

that is absolutely ridiculous, what all did you have?
Kenwood 8017
nav unit
Sirius
2 7" visors
2 7" headrest
2 10.4 flip downs
PS2
Alpine separates front n rear
DEI 20 Farad cap
X-File 2000 watt d class
X-file 1200 watt 4 ch
4 Kicker L7 12's
1/0 gauge wiring
dual yellow tops
I did the install and dis some suede on the headliner and used plexi and neons. The box was in the bed and was a blow through design.

I was a sales rep for a company and buy everything at wholesale:nice:

My boat has 2 15's,4 6.5's and 4 6X9's and 4 amps.3600 watts total

got any pics?

I'm in the process of doing the same thing (also with a 68 coupe).
Bought all of the components and the amp, around $3000 total.
And I prefer clean above loud, but loud also is better :D

I'll measure the cut out size in the kick panels for ya (slight oops on my part)
6 3/4's don't quite fit (yet!)

Unfortunately I won't be able to install till maybe the end of July (according to the guy putting everything back together and painting :nonono: )

There are other places you can get info though, look around i believe the are a few free software programs to help with calculating box size for your subwoofers.
As i dig up some more info, I'll check back with the thread and try to help!

Who know's maybe this will help me out too:SNSign:

Ok, I got these kick panels from CJ Pony Parts
Hole Cut out Measures 5 5/16" diameter
Low Side of cut hole depth to back of panel measures 1 5/16"
High side of cut hole depth to back of panel measures 1 15/16"
Outside of Flat that hole is cut into measures 6 1/4"
panel is 1/8" thick and apparently Made in USA by PONY and appears to be good Quality (of course it has not been test fit for reason listed in previous post)

Hope this helps:D
