Couple of questions about MAKING a supercharger kit

So I don't have 3,000 to drop on a supercharger that was made to fit my mustang. But after some reading I have seen other members who have made their own kits for around 1,000. I have some fabrication skills. I have a friend who owns a metal shop so if I need a bracket CNC cut or anything of that sort I can. But I would rather just get the right stuff of ebay. Before I start gathering parts, I have some questions. If I had all the parts in hand I could probably answer my own questions.... but I don't so here is the plan...

Get a paxton novi 1000 (or similiar) head unit off ebay and Get brackets for a fox body and this SC.
I realize I may have to move the alternator to the other driver side...no big deal. Will this bracket for a fox work fine on my classic or will it require extensive modification (to either the bracket or my car). Also my battery is already in the trunk.

The biggest question I have is belts. Can i use the v belt setup I have on the car now or will i be forced to switch to serpentine? I have the simplest possible belt setup.... no PS, no AC.

And if anybody has or could take some closeup pics of their supercharger installation on a classic I would really appreciate it.

You are on the right track on building your own SC kit. I will post a couple of pics and if you want some others let me know. The kit for a fox body should be fine but I can only speak to the powerdyne kit which fits great. You may want to move your soleniod as the blower may be close to it. As far as the belt I would take the time to switch it all over to Serp. for many reasons we could get into latter and I may have some left over pullies. The other issues I assume you have thought about are increased fuel pump capacity along with a boost referenced regulator. As far as the pump goes dont pinch pennies or you will run your engine lean....You will need to run a larger fuel line and plan on running another to the back of the car as a return since the smaller diameter of the factory's line is not sufficient and the fuel pressure will increase and cause flooding. Also I guess your are still carb'd? If so I can tell you the supercharger hat I am running has been great but you'll have some work to do on the jets, pv valves...But there is a website detailing the carb mods neededs so no worries......Do you know your compression ratio? How close is Asheboro to Asheville?

Theres nothing like being blown in a classic...

I really would like to avoid switching to serp if at all possible. Just seems like a hassle and the benefits just aren't worth it. I would like to keep v belt unless someone can talk me out of it. I could be way wrong though. I have a holley 600 dp modded for blowthrough, and a carter mech fuel pump that is boost referenced. I know not quite adequate, but it should be enough for very low boost levels.

Going to Serp. is easier than you may think for instance the alt. is the same you just change the pulley....You are going to need to if you plan on mounting the blower on a fox body braket not to mention the LTD alt. bracket. Also look at the Contact area of the belt to the pulley and the serp set up is way better not to mention just more reliable. I am installing my new dart heads this week so if you need some pics let me know at [email protected]

I've done a junkyard TT build before (on this same mustang actually), but I ran out of money and time. I decided to can it and sell off some of the parts. I wasn't going to be able to afford a wideband or close to a proper fuel system. Now it is a different story. This time I know more of what is involved, so I'm going to give it another shot. I was thinking about SC just to do something different, but now i'm leaning torwards turbo's again....

I've done 2 junkyard S/C kits using V-belts. Both times you would burn the belt over 3000 rpm and snap it if you put the pedal more then half way down. To me this defeats the purpose if you can't use the power it wants to give you. Unfortunatley i can't tell you what their solutions for this were as they both took them and said they would fix it later. Also it is hard to find a charger with V-belt pulleys, both of the ones i did had a dual V-belt pulleys on them but the engines had single. Just remember, you may save a little money by skipping over steps now, but you will probably lose more fixing it when it breaks.

It's not that changing to serpentine is diffcult at this point. I was just curious if vbelt was possible. Now i'm having a debate among myself between turbo or supercharger... I only want low low low boost right which might actually be somewhat of a problem with a turbo. I'd much rather have a turbo in the long run. I guess I have some decisions to make...

As long as you stay in the turbo boundries, you'll be fine. I only ran 7psi, or 8. I forget. No surging, and ran on pump gas just fine.

tyler,
What pullies did you use to change to serpentine? Did you use a standard or reverse pump? What radiator outlets and inlet did you have? Any pics?

Cant find the part number but they are march pullies from summit..Crank,Alt, Waterpump. I know they are an underdrive ratio. I used a standard rotation pump. My radiator has staggerd outlets, top one is on the passenger side. I dont have any pics on file and my waterpump is currently off the engine, but they really were bolt-in. I did have to use some allthread rod to get the alternator aligned.
