c4-c5 whats the difference?

anyone know what the difference is between the c4 and c5 transmissions? we have a c5 that we are planing to build. i have been told that i can get a c4 bellhousing (which i have), and that the valve body is different. but noone has been able to tell me if there is a difference internaly other than the valvebody.

If I remember right, there are differences in the valvebody, bell housing and input shafts. The c5 used a lockup style converter. C4 are easier to upgrade.

well ptc said they have a converter for me ( with the c4 bell) and they said they have a shift kit for the c5. the only thing im not sure about is like clutches and steels and bands

If i remember correctly the c5 uses a clutch pack with 5 clutches and the c4 uses 4, i think.

it is best to use a c5 case when building a c4. better lubrication passages, from what ive heard.

If your planning to put much TORQUE to it, invest in a upgraded 2nd gear planetary. That will be the first part to go. Good luck.

The biggest difference from my understanding, was that the C5 has a lock up torque converter, while the c4 doesn't lock up.

that is true about the TC...but since the C5 is a newer revision of the C4, it makes sense that other parts have been updated or tweaked.

well this is goin into a 93 gt stock with a f303 cam and 373s out back and we are converting it to carb for tuning reasons. we are building this car for a friends 15 year old to drag race in the street class here at our local track
