Pics of my shortened Aerostar driveshaft

Where are you guys getting Al shafts shortened for $25? The only place around here that I can find that will do it wants $125.00 balanced and everything. If that includes ujoints fine but if it is just welding, come on.

Anybody know anyone in the Cleveland, OH area?

The $25 is for the shaft itself from the junkyard. At least in my case.

I think I paid a little more than $125 for shortening, balancing and joints.

It cost me $125 to have the aluminum shaft shortened. For the stock shaft they wanted $100 to shorten. So it cost me $25 MORE to have the aluminum shaft shortened vs the stock shaft.

I think you'll have a hard time finding a shop that will do a quality job for less than $100.

Ah! I see your math now!

I thought $25 sounded too cheap but figured the going rate is the going rate :)

Anyway here is what I found right up the street from work for $40 and after a quick scrubbing/degreasing:

I probably could've found one cheaper but this was literally less than 1/2 mile away. It was marked "92 Aerostar Stick" and "Not Aerostar" and is about 61" minus the slip yoke and flange mount. The slip yoke fits the T5 and is even the same PN as the one that came out of my 95 parts car. I am dropping it off in the morning to be shortened.

Aerostar is the way to go!

I just got mine back from the driveline guy today! 51" is what i ended up needing. I have a 91 302 roller, T5 and 91 bellhousin and an 8" rear end.
The guy I went to said the shaft is plenty strong up tp 500ftlb of torque! I cant wait to get it in!

I had to swap out the rear flange because the bolt pattern was different than the mustang rear I have under the car. I spent about an hour at the parts store measuring u-joints until I found 2 possibles, lucky for me one of them fit :nice: No idea what the original application was though.

You don't use the Aerostar rear flange. The Spicer joints I listed earlier in this thread fit the 8" rear and the stock saddle bolts. If I remember correctly, it was just a new replacement part for the 8", 65 Mustang in my case.

I am using a flange, from a late model mustang not the Aerostar, because the rear differential is from a 95 GT. Originally the shop was supposed to only shorten the shaft but they assembled it with new u-joints and everything.

The only reason I spent so much time measuring at the parts store is the parts guys behind the counter can't help you find parts unless the specific application is in their computer.

Sorry, Didn't know that. I was assuming an 8 or 9"

Isn't that the truth?:)

Hey, how was your weather there yesterday? We had 70+. I'm just North of Toledo.

We were mid 60's tuesday, I rode my motorcycle to work, and about 70 yesterday. It was sooooooooooo nice. Then this morning my truck was frozen shut

Where abouts north of Toledo? I went to engineering school at UT. I graduated from there 12/01.
