How much fluid to refill a T5?

  • Sponsors (?)

I just did mine. If I remember correctly, 3.5qts Buy a 1 gallon jug and you should have a little left over.

I'm sure you already know this, but just in case: Only fill the transmission until fluid starts comming out of the fill plug (if you are adding fluid through the shifter). Don't fill it right up to the top.

thanks.....I fill through the shifter, but hate checking that fill plug:notnice:

Iskwezm for the summer use 75/90 gear oil. ATF in a t5 is for colder weather conditions and I see you live in California. If you are going to use ATF, use Dexron-3/Mercon fluid. Don't use Type F or ATF+3. Have fun.

i use straight 30WT..................thats what i was told to use by the guy who built it.

You are suppose to run ATF in world class T5's. Unless he used different parts when he rebuilt the trans you are going to want to run ATF. The non-world class T5 had the same basic parts but they were made out of different materials. I believe the non-world class had brass synchros where as the world class had synchros which are similar in material to what is used in auto transmissions.

Run ATF. DO NOT RUN gear oil.

Ask me how I know this.

I think the spec fill is 2.25 quarts, which puts just enough fluid inside the case to touch if you stick your finger in the fill hole, but not dribble out. If you over fill it, it will vent itself out of the vent.

I know the manual says ATF, if your guy is recommending 30wt I would ask why? before I used either one.

I am pretty sure the fill is just over 2 qts like CraigMBA said.
My trans is a 85 T5, this guy is known for building T5's in orange county and said something about the internals being different then a later model and he changed some other things. I have been running 30wt for in it for over 3 years now:shrug:

I believe 85 was the year they switched to world class from non-world class. If yours was from an earlier production model then that would mean you have a non-world class and you SHOULD be running gear oil and not ATF. Find out what is on the tag if you still have it or check the numbers on the case.
