I just ripped out the rear end from my 68 coupe, and i know that obviously i should replace fluid and bearings, but what all is involved with the rebuild of a rear end? I just want to identify what parts i need to get.

p.s. i am not looking to do new gears or anything

If theres no problems, and everything seems fine, just leave well enough alone. A diff will let you know loud and clear if something is wrong. Just put some fresh synthetic fluid in and be done with it.

I tend to agree with Decurion. If it doesn't have any apparent problems, leave it alone. Without proper tools and training, you could easily mess up a good thing. Now is not the time to learn how to rebuild it--wait until you have problems or feel you need a gear/carrier change.

so you don't think that the seals and bearings need to be replaced then? I am not worried about messing it up at all, rear ends are rather straight forward, and I have all the necessary tools.

are you sure you ahve all the tools? If you are not changing the gears, then just change the axle bearings and seals. Dont mess with anything in the pumpkin

Change the wheel bearings and the axle seals. If the pinion seal leaks, you can change that too. You need a seal installer kit, a press, and a chisel to mark the pinion and pinion nut for reinstallation to correct torque if you elect to change it.
