what is a charger motion plate?

Just curious about what a charger motion delete is all about. I've seen it in several other threads. What does it do and why would you get rid of it.

Charge motion plates are plates located in the intake runners that have butterflies controlled by a motor that open and close depending on the position of the throttle. The delete plates get rid of the butterflies, thus ridding the intake of any obstructions. Some people have reported the butterflies malfunctioning and staying closed causing big problems, so some see it as a safety precaution. You do need to tune for them though. I have them and am happy with them. I swear I could feel a difference, but it might be a placebo effect. They are an inexpensive mod ($120 or so) and even if they are only worth around 7-8 horses, every little bit helps.

I'm sure I've got some of the terminology wrong, but that's pretty much the jest of it.

"At the end of each intake runner was a new-to-Mustang feature Ford called a charge motion control valve. At low engine speeds and light loads, these specially shaped control flaps closed to speed the intake charge and induce a tumble effect in the combustion chamber. That caused the fuel to mix more thoroughly and burn more quickly and efficiently. At higher engine speeds, the charge motion control valves opened fully for maximum flow into the combustion chambers."

All dyno's are a little different, maybe they only got 4 or 5 horses, but maybe someone else picked up 7 or 8, maybe even 9 because the conditions were just right or better than when Brenspeed did thiers. Personally, I couldn't care less whether it's 4-5 or 7-8, I'm more concerned with getting down the track faster which these help do. Plus, I learned how to take my intake off installing the plates which I've never done before.

Odd that Brenspeed would say it that way though, they sell them, you'd think they'd try to sell them versus trying to turn people away.

Do you notice a quick throttle response time with the install? I would imagine that removing the "valve" would eliminate any WOT valve actuation delay and let the engine breathe quicker. Let me know, because if it does have this effect, then maybe it is worth it to me, otherwise it is not worth my time...

I picked up 1.2 mph in the 1/8-mile with my cmrc deletes with the accompanying BamaChips tune (I already had a tune, I just got the updated Bama tune for the cmrc's). Maybe Doug just makes a better tune for the cmrc deletes?

Again, I'm not sure about HP gains, but overall drivability improved. Throttle response has increased as well. I think it's a great mod and would do it again. There are no downsides to it and every little bit helps. By the way, I have a Bama tune as well.

brenspeed does not push items that customers dont need. they are pretty honest and will tell you when you dont need a certain mod, or if money can be better spent elsewhere.

Understandable, I think. The plates don't give you near the satisfaction or effectiveness as say gears or LT's, but they also don't cost near as much either. If I needed every little bit of money for certian mods and couldn't spare any, I would definately skip them, but for about a 100 bucks and being able to install yourself, I think it's just one of those things that you might as well do.

Just out of curiousity, have you heard of anyone not happy with them (serious question, not trying to be a smart ass)? I don't recall reading anyone having any trouble with them or recieved negative performance from them.

There are other things that I would do first before the plates, but for the money, they aren't a bad mod.

i heard of one instance, but i believe it turned out to be a tune related issue.
