sand paper or wire wheel so that you can remove the rust.

if it's just surface rust you can sand until you have fresh metal showing at the rust spot and around the area, primer and paint. if your not good at priming and painting i'd have a shop do it so it doesn't look like a botch job.
 
^^ Like he said, you gotta get down to clean bare metal. I've had really good luck using a self-etching primer on the bare metal, regular primer over that and then topcoat with some duplicolor. Just for fixing small areas though... now the car needs a whole new paint job.
 
Well wire wheel are just the part don't you need a tool you put the wire wheel on to?

Also i can't really mask off what i dont want to get the wire wheel on so how do i do it, so i only am taking off the rust now other paint that is fine around it?

A wire wheel fits into a drill. No tool needed (maybe a chuck) with a drill. Rust spreads (usually up) so chances are the places you have rust, when you start to remove paint you might find more. You have to sand a huge area anyways, so don't worry about just doing a "quarter size" area, because it will turn into a 3" area.

I have to sand a huge area anyways?... why is that?

If the rust is only in a small area?

also, the wire wheel will remove the rust so i can get it painted over it?

If i start using the wire wheel to the rust, even though their is good paint near where the rust is, is it okay if the wire wheel gets onto the paint, cuz it will sctrach it all up... i'm probaly getting a paint job soon newayz.???
 
The reason that you will have to sand a larger area of the paint than just the rusted spot you can see is due to the fact that the rust travels under the paint of the car where tiny amounts of moisture have gotten trapped between the paint and sheetmetal of the car. I just got done doing this and the car is drying in the garage right now after the full paint job. It's not a big deal to do (especially if you plan to get a paint job in the near future). If your rust is in a seam on the body lines like mine was you should wire wheel as much of the rust as you can and then use a rust converter like POR15 or the rust coverter spray you can get from walmart or pretty much any auto parts store and spray that on the area. Then use the self etching primer, regular primer, and paint. If you have any other questions just ask.

you don't just sand a small spot where you have the trouble with rust or a dent , you sand a large area around the spot to feather everything in so that you don't see that spot. .
if you use a wire wheel on a drill then yes you'll need to sand all the wire wheel marks out before you ever think about priming that area. and if you prime the area you'll need to sand the primer before you paint that area.

Yep, you have to feather out the spot otherwise you will see the spot when it's painted.

The picture below will show you how much I tried to feather out the messed up paint on my ex-stang. Ended up taking all the paint off because I couldn't get it to feather out enough, but the original spots were about the size of a quarter.

Well a new maaco opened up around my house and this kid i know got his paint job done there and it came out great.

I was going to get rid of the rust that I can see without stripping all the paint off cuz maaco will do that. The thing is im afraid they'll get all the paint off and then they're will be alot more rust..

what should i do?
 
How much you think they'll charge me for that?

why not just call and ask them instead of getting 20 different prices from ppl and not one of them being what maaco would charge.

it's simple call tell them what you expect to be done and ask "them" what they would charge you to do that work, or better yet take your car by so they can give you an exact price.
