My 05 has started acting strange tonight. I started it up earlier tonight and moved it into the garage and the rpms seemed to get stuck at 2000 rpms for about 15 seconds then went to normal. When I got out of the car I smelled the clutch or some funky smell At this point I was curious wether the car was okay so backed out of the gargae and took the car for a spin. I went through all the gears and shifted at 6000 rpms everything seemed fine. When I started to slow down the the rpms shot up to 4000 rpms for about 30 seconds and finally the message display beeps and says engine fail safe mode and the car had no power at all. At this point I thought a blew the engine and i drove home on 4 cylinders it seemed like. Once in the driveway I shut the car off and started the car back up and everything goes back to normal. I took the car for a spin and now everything is okay. Have any of you experianced this or know what the problem could of been? Should I take it to the dealer to make sure I have no engine damage? The car is all stock except for a for racing axle back exhaust " borla stingers". Any info would be appreciated!

I had my car go into fail safe after pulling up to a stop sign once. Shut it off and fired it back-up and it was fine. This was several months ago. No problems since. If it doesn't continue I wouldn't be too concerned. Computer glitch.

My understanding of the engine fail safe mode is that it occurs if the engine overheats. Then, indeed, the engine runs on only four cylinders.

If the engine did not overheat, but it went to fail safe mode, there is a glitch. Whether you could get it to happen for the dealer is another question.

All the cars today, not just the Mustang, are computers on wheels, and we all know how reliable computers are.

Fail Safe Mode

I thought I would share this, my sons 05 GT did this and when he had the dealer check the codes they replaced the throttle body. One other post on this subject and they also had a throttle body replacement.

His car is running fine. I would suggest you have it taken to your dealer and have them run the codes and check your car.

Just my thoughts.........

These are not glitches, something in your cars electronics causes the computer system monitoring your car to show this message and there will be a code stored. Fail Safe is designed to let you drive without destroying your motor in emergencies.

If under warranty I would certainly have the dealer check it out.
