so my friend has this 91 accord. no interior, 2 seats, jdm h22a built head, full suspension. very nice car, ive done some work to it before. i havent talked to him yet. my friend (96gtho on here) told me they were driving back from camping in va. beach (him, his gf., his gf's brother, and their friend) were all sleeping except the dude who owned the car, who was driving. my friend said he hit something in the road that looked like a styraphoam cup, and 10 minutes later it caught fire. well he pulled it over, and everyone got out, and got their stuff out. had firetruck on the way, ect.

my friend 94gtho got them, paid the towtruck to take the car to his driveway. well i went over to his house while he wasnt there and had a look-see. it destroyed the whole engine bay,and got trhough to the interior a little. still wet from the fire hoses. strut bars melted in half, no paint anywhere, absolutely awful. makes you step back and think about things once in a while. someone just gave this kid a explorer with a blown headgasket, me and 94gtho are gonna try to replace that for him to get him goin again.

but anyways this car had an optima in it. i think it was a red top. and i remember reading some horror stories about these batteries catching fire. theres a girl on here that had that happen if im not mistaken... whats the deal with that?

anyways im just a little shaken up. ive left my buddy who had the car a voicemail tellin him im here to help and ima help him and 94gtho with the explorer. overall im just glad that they all got out okay and that it didnt cause any injuries. this kinda stuff really makes you step back and think...

I would suspect poorly executed modifications or defective fuel system components sooner than I would suspect the battery. Particularly, with the engine bay being in the condition that you describe.

That would be me that had the faulty red top. I did have a cell totally melt out of the battery. Here is a pic of it.

I was also told by several shops some other stories of their batteries being faulty. But, I think it was a batch of them and it is true that it is VERY uncommon. However, Optima is not offering to pay for it now. They want me to fight them in court.
