I'm looking for information on how you think the 2005+ compares to the 99-04. Your likes/dislikes, that kind of thing. Hows the power? Response to mods?

I have owned a 88LX 5.0, a 99 GT and I now have this 99 Cobra. I have the car where I am pretty happy with the power level, but after sitting in a 2005, I am really liking the feel of the seats and overall solid-ness feel of the car. It was a V6, so no idea on power but I am looking for input from past 99-04 owners. Just kicking around the idea at this point. It's a summer daily driver.

Thanks!

I didn't personally own an 99-04 mustang, but i have driven them many many times. I drove my cousin's for a whole week while i visited them in arizona. With the new cars The power delivery is so much smoother and so much stronger. The car handles much better. it drives much more solid. Put it this way, the mustang has been on the best10 list every year and the 3v 4,6 has recieved awards and recognition out the wazoo. If you get the 05+ with an intake/tune plus some gears it will feel you have supercharged the older mustang. I've driven supercharged sn95's and they are damn fast, but an NA mustang 05+ can hang with them with a few bolt on parts.

The older mustangs drive like ****. they do. the road feel is horrible.

Go drive one. you'll know what i am talking about.

Had:

01 Cobra
03 Cobra
02 GT vert
89 LX 5.0

07 is a hands down winner.

Better MPG, as fast if not faster in the quarter mile, WAY, WAY more int room for both passenger and driver. Heated seats, pwr pass seats. Sounds better and looks better.
Granted most would rather have a striped down GT, we opted for cruising comfort. :)

Just a shared opinion from 2 stang bangers (wife & I)

P.S.
Did I mention all the stares & drools ............???

I owned an 01 Cobra vert, and an 03 Coupe, and now own an 07 GT.

I still think the S197's interior feels more cramped than the 99-04, even though it's supposed to be larger. My New Edge SN95's didn't have any of the rattles in the dash my 07 has now... but that's where the virtues of the older cars stop for me... I loved all my Mustangs (I've owned older generations also), but the newest is the best by far.....

I owned an 01 procharged GT. Cant compare the two at all. My 07's interior is a night and day difference with the old. Shifter placement, seats, gauges, everything is much better in the s197. Handleing and modding are much better in the s197's. Intake & tune was worth all the boltons I had on the 01(before s/c).

The only thing that the old stangs have on the new is the exhuast sound.

I used to have an 03 GT Coupe 5spd, with full bolt ons. My friends and I go and test drive cars on the weekends for fun. And one such weekend I happen to test drive a used 05.... I fell in love with the mustang all over again!!! I immediately went home consulted the "boss", and after her approval traded my 03 in on the 05. The power and the handling are the most noticable traits of the S197's. My only dislikes with the car... 1. The hydraulic clutch 2. Redline needs to be higher (maybe 6500 or so). Other than those two things. The S197 beats the New Edge hands down!

P.S. I see that you have a Cobra. As does my roomate. Lets just say after the tune he did not like my decision to purchase the 05.

I've had a 2000, 2002 and a 2003 Mach 1. The 2005 is by far the best Mustang. I have also owned a 1965, a 1966, a 1974, 1977, 1978, 1990 and still own a 1966 as well as my 2005. (I think I left out a couple.) The 2005 is better than any of them, ride quality, power, ect. There simply is no comparison. I still love the others, though.

I had an '02 GT. I went to a dealer on my birthday back in '05 to get a new set of floor mats for my '02, and there was the '05 GT in the showroom. It was the only GT they had in stock, and the only reason it was still there was that a guy had ordered it, but backed out when it arrived. Well, I got my new floor mats, and a new GT to go with them. Best birthday present I've ever had.

Ironically, I asked this question a little over a month ago.. Let's just say that the 2004 is gone- I now own an '07 Shelby GT..

I drove an '05 when they first hit the streets- October of 2004. I was impressed back then and I still am today. Despite how much I loved my '04 GT, I was extremely disappointed with the quality. (rattles, window squeaks, road noise, front brake grind, AC vents that froze my knees :nonono:, etc...)

I have had the '07 for a month and 500 miles. I must say that the difference between the two Mustangs is night and day. Everything about the car is well though out (vent placement, console, shifter, etc) .. Ford really did their homework this time. My only gripe thus far is the speedometer. I have young eyes and excellent vision, but distinguishing 75 mph versus 80 is a PITA!!! Oh, also, I liked the placement of the e-brake in the '04.. On the '07, it seems like it is always in my way..

Regardless of the fact that my '07 has stiffer springs and is lower (Shelby package), it still rides very smoothly. You cannot "feel" the road in this car.. I really have a lot to say about how nice the new ones are..

You will not regret trading the old one!:nice:

Owned a 95 and a 2000 v6 Mustang. Driven a 96 Cobra and 01 GT. I can tell you from experience, my 07 GT beats them all in every category. The S197 has more power:hail2: more comfortable:drool: better handling:nice: and a total chick magnet:D My only complaint, it is a police magnet:fuss:

as well did i trade in my 02 gt for a new 07. I was quite sad to see the 02 go but i really like my 07. I think my 02 was however lower and it felt better in cornering. Or maybe I'm just not used to the new one yet. The new one has a lot more power, interior room (i feel like a midget sitting in it). I feel for you having to step down from a cobra to GT but they are damn nice cars.

Hope this helps,
matt

I owned a 03 GT before I purchased my 05 and it is hands down a totally different car. Repsonse to mods, Interior Design, and the overall feel of driving the car is just so much better.

The only thing I favor of the 99-04 is the exhaust sound. I haven't heard an s197 I really like yet. Unless you remove the muffler (SLP)... Putting the mufflers behind the rear-axle was stupid IMO.

I had a '03 GT previously. While I loved that car, and considered getting another, after driving an '05 there was no comparison. The Sn95's do tend to have a better sounding exhaust, because the mufflers are before the axle. The S197 exhaust sounds great, it's just not the classic Mustang sound you're used to because of the muffler placement. Other than the exhaust, the S197 beats the Sn95 hands down.

I have owned a 98GT, and now a 03 and 07.

Night and day difference between the 03 and 07. The new one rides better, feels stiffer, seems quieter, and is roomier for my 6'4" self. It definately feels like a bigger car, but I'm loving it so far.

I still feel more 'connected' to the 03, maybe because of the size and the way it feels like it wraps around me. But I've only driven the 07 about 200 miles.

Nice

Thanks a lot guys for taking the time to write those responses. Lots of good info, seems like everyone is happier in almost every way with the 05+ cars.

I am really just in the thinking about it stage now.

I should have my Ducati paid off by the end of the summer and then if I sold the Cobra I could have a pretty good downpayment on a low milage 05+ so we shall see...

Thanks again for the info guys!

Only two things that annoy me so far about the 05-07s:

1) The hood seems eternally long when driving the thing.

2) The way the corners of the hood meet the fenders, if you look at it from certain angles it looks like there's a huge gap between the two. Seen this on all S197s.
