1968 console stereo

Just installed a 68 console . There are two openings for the old knobs but they the holes are too deep for modern knobs. has anyone retrofitted something new into the stock opening?

In my 68 I took that bezel and cut the opening out larger so that I could fit a modern day cd player in it. Other than the obvious look of modern day electronics it looks as though it could've been stock.

I'd get you a pic of it but alas the car is still in storage. Allthough if you'd really like to see gimme a couple days and I can get one. :SNSign:

Yeah, its pretty easy to retrofit a modern (single DIN) stereo in the 67-68 radio bezel, you just need a dremel and a cutting disc .

About a month ago I installed mine, I just needed to trim slightly the bottom of the stereo rectangular trim, here is a pic:

Just to be sure you know, there are companies that modify modern stereos to have the two shafts and bolt right in. Cutom Autosunds makes some crappy one but Ken Harrison Enterprises (KHE) has some that are said to be of higher quailty.

You might look around for someone who has already modified their bezel and buy it from them. The unmodified (stock) bezel is worth a lot more and you should have no trouble finding a buyer for it. The unmodified bezels are becoming very hard to find and are needed for concourse resto or for use when someone wants the old radio in to hide a secretaudio one or something like that.

The problem is more involved when dealing with a console in the 68 (67 too I believe). The upright section of the console has a padded cover (similar to a dash material) that goes over the radio opening. The 2 radio potentiometers protrude through the padded piece, which also addes to the depth which the knobs require in order to mount onto the shaft. The stock aftermarket radio knobs do not work properly. I have this same problem, but haven't bothered to do anything about it since the 2 outer knobs which control the tuner and volume work fine. It's the inner knobs which control the balance and treble/bass that won't work. I just set these and leave them, so I have been able to live with it. You could try contacting Custom Autosound, they probably make the right knobs. Also, if you can get your hands on the original radio knobs for a console car, those would work too.

yah I was talking about the bezel above with the cut already in it. But they are making the consol for the 67 now so I don’t feel so bad about cutting up the one I have.

I concur with jcode68. We are talking console so cutting the metal backing plate to fit a DIN radio is not a problem. Cutting up the overlay pad so it does not look like crap is a different story because the faceplate trim will need to mount to the pad not the metal support. If it were a 67(without pad) then its easy to do but a nice OEM 67 console radio bezel goes for $150+ on ebay. and yes the do make a repro of the whole console.....at $1000.
