Stock Air Box Vs. Conical Filter

  • Sponsors (?)

I've decided that I want to get my air filter out of the hot engine bay.
I want to be able to still use use my C&L CAI and Meter instead of buying a whole new set up.
The stock air box on here is sold. There is one on ebay, link below.

If you look at the picture from C&L it looks like there's a special coupler that goes between the MAF and the air box. Where would I get one if needed?

My other option was a Kenne Bell Ram Air Intake. I wouldn't use this if my car was a daily driver, but it is used for strip more than street.

Or maybe I could buy an elbow that would go into the fender wall and a fender wall filter.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks

If the CAI puts a bend just before the C&L, then you are still likely to have issues.
The stock airbox is the best way to run a C&L meter. This is the only application which they were meant to be used in.

Keep in mind that the stock airbox is a CAI... and will not be a restriction.

If you are going to run a C&L MAF, then the stock airbox is the best way to do it...

I have experience with this. When I converted my 88 to mass air I used a C & L meter and an exposed conical filter, the car would not idle and would rev up and down. The previous owner did not have the air box so I had to get one off of ebay and that fixed all of my problems and ran like a champ. Stock air box + K & N panel filter = cold air intake. If I were do this over again I would chose a different MAF company, C & L is way to picky.

Those "ram air" setups are a waste. For one, there's no difference in air flow between putting it right on the ground in the front and just sticking it in your fender - you'd have to already be going at least 75 to 100 MPH to get even a vague "ram" effect going on there.

Secondly, they might as well contract the name of that product with Hoover, because it's just a vacuum-cleaner attachment for your engine to suck up every little bit of road debris along the way (yes, even on the track - little bits of rubber and such) to clog your air filter or, worse, if you run through even a slightly deep puddle, you risk sucking up water.

And third ... what's wrong with the stock airbox, anyway? Just because it's OEM doesn't necessarily mean its useless. As stated many times before, just slap in a K&N panel filter and be done with it ... although, unless you're seriously sucking LOTS of air through there, I doubt you'd even see any benefit with that over simply going with the ol' paper FRAM filter...

Answer to your first question is that coupler in between the mass air meter and stock air box is a ford OEM part, if you need the part number I will be home this weekend and I can get it for you (PM me if you do).

And I had the kenne bell ram air intake on my stang when it was SD and I did not like (the previous owner had installed it). I saw a couple dyno sheets where they lose hp from installing the KB ram air over the stock box with K&N. I did not like the look of it installed.

Take a serious look at AFM power pipes and PMAS meters if you are running after
market heads and intake. They relocate the filter and the meter to the fenderwell. Cleans up the engine bay nicely and definitely adds more upper end power if you own a modified 5.0 (heads, cam , intake) I am not a fan of the stock airbox unless you have a stock head and intake motor.

Even with a wimpy bbk fenderwll cold air intake my 93 cobra (stock) picked up around 5 rwhp in the upper rpm. I would post up the dyno sheet but that was back in 98 and no longer have the file

I would recommend him to the AFM powerpipes as well, but none of the power pipes with work with the C & L 76mm MAF. You can call anderson to verify, but already have, I wanted to go with a power pipe as well but the C & L is only designed to work with the stock air box.

yeah I know. That is why I mentioned the PMAS meter. From a self EEC tuning standpoint I do not like the C&L stuff. I have seen way to many problems with their meters

Exactly, next year when I get the procharger im getting a PMAS meter, I wish I would've know more about the C & L MAF before I purchased, oh well live and learn. Its been a great meter for running the stock air box.

I bought the car with the C&L already in it. I bought a new Ford Racing GT-40 Crate Engine with B-303 cam and I bought a C&L sampling tube for 40.00 when I changed to 24lb. injectors instead of paying 280.00 for a pro-m to see if it would work ok. I figured $40.00 was worth a try. It works ok actually. I just don't like the filter in the engine bay sucking hot air.
I just bought a stock air box with the coupler on e-bay for $35.00 shipped.

What type and size fasteners do I need to mount it to the fender wall?
What number K&N Filter do I need. Is #33-2015 the right one?
Thanks

I dont get it, i use a bbk cai with a big filter that almost touches the back of my headlight. I also have a mass air meter but i dont have any problems with drivability issues or idle surging.. since im a mile above sea-level would that that be a factor with those issues? I dont oil my filter-manufacture says i dont have to but im still debating if i should.

You must not have a C & L MAF, I know for sure that Pro-M works well in any position. What MAF do you have?

You missed some key points in the thread. The driviablity issues being discussed in this thread is due to a open conical filter IN the engine compartment, not in the fenderwell. Your fenderwell setup is why you are not having any problems

I am sure that setup will work fine but one day when your budget allows, you need to try out the AFM PP and PMAS 80mm combo. It will maximize your power

I installed the factory air box with a K&N panel filter. Low end and light throttle driveability is a big improvement. Thanks for all the help!!!!!
This is my best time so far with the factory air box, about 700 miles on the motor.

I called C&L today about my application. They said, if you have a electric fan, a conical filter will work fine with their MAF. An electric fan, due to the size and air it puts out, will not effect the read on MAF.
Yea, what else would you expect from C&L. Clueless tech, and BS products.

Electric fans *do* result in fan wash. The MKVIII fans pulls more CFM than the stock fan, and you have less of a shroud!

For an electric fan to work on a 5.0, it must pull a lot of air! Plus, you're pulling that MAX amount even at idle and with a small shroud. So, at idle with a proper electric fan (that won't over heat your Stang), the fan's wash will be worse!

Go with the stock air box, or the BBK CAI kit.
