gt40p's?

i found a 97 explorer with a 5.0 in it but im not sure whatyears had the gt40p's in em can anyone help??

take a valve cover off and look at the castings...it should say GT40P on the bottom edge below the rocker arms. they're probably not though because the explorers didnt get P heads until 98

yeah man it got them in 98. the mountaineer came in 97 then the following year they both got gt40P heads on the 5.0 version.

some 97s had P heads....the 97 explorer i tore apart definitly had P heads, they're on my car.

easiest way to find out is to check.

BEST way to find out is to look at the front of the head. 3 vertical bars on the front of the drivers headand they are Ps, all explorers before 98(somein 97) had the regular gt40s

97and older had gt40s and the intakes with the egr passages.

98 and newer most likely don't have egr passages(my 98 did) and gt40ps

The P is supposedly a better head.

Ok...


Roughly the last half of '97 got P heads. If you wanna double check that, go to a Ford dealership and tell them you need heads for a '97 Explorer, and they'll ask you all about when it was manufactured. Prior to that they all had non-P GT40s (same heads as the previous 5.0 Cobras).

im not sure which ones are on the explorer, im pulling them off tomorrow but i wont know until i can get to the numbers...with all the accessories you really cant see anything on the heads like the numbers...i guess maybe by the angle of the plugs? im snagging the gt40 intake also even though i dont need it, using my trickflow street manifold.... but ill just sell it or something...

Look at the front of the head as it's bolted to the engine....you're looking for 3 or 4 vertical "bars" like III or IIII in the casting on the head. If it has 3, they're GT40, if it has 4, they're GT40P. (for some reason i'm questioning that, like maybe it's 2 for the GT40 and 3 for the Ps but i'm fairly sure i have it right, it's been a while).

i threw the regular ones on my 93 gt. putting money into production iron heads is a waste of time if you ask me.
