Can you check my H/C/I combo...

Hi,

I've been lurking, searching and collecting parts for my H/C/I combo and have a few questions. My car is a daily driver with 90k miles and I'm not planning on adding a S/C or Nitrous in the future. Just trying to make my car more fun to drive every day.

Which cam do you think would work best with my combo and goal? Do I need an bigger MAF? Also, does anyone know a good shop for a tune in northern NJ?

So far I have:
94/95 Cobra U/L Intake (Plan on having the lower ported)
Rebuilt GT-40 (F3ZE-AA) Heads w/TF Valve Spring Kit & Crane 1.7 Ped RR (Light Porting & Valve Job)
BBK 70mm TB

Need to buy (Let me know if I overlooked anything!!):
24lb Injectors
Crane 444225 or TF Stage 1
Gaskets
Head Bolts
Misc odds and ends

Thanks,
Demetrios

Hi Demetrious ... and Welcome to 94-95 :SNSign:

I'll address your meter concerns and let others deal with your cam Q :D

You basically are building a Cobra combo with a cam

Having said that ...
The OEM meter is quite capable of supporting that combo's airflow ;)

I mean ... You don't have to look too hard to see Cobra combos running
their stock meter ... which btw ... is the exact same meter you now got

You could have your tuner make it work just fine with those 24's :)
however ...
It won't run all that well with 24's and no tune :(
so
You may wanna find a meter caled for the 24's

So ... You got several options ... as I see it.

Thanks for the info Grady, I appreciate it.

Right on. :nice:

Oh, and I am selling my 24#r's, I can't use them on the 408. They are about 2 years old and the car was always well tuned.

Id like to see a 65mm Ford TB on there. 65 is PLENTY and I like the Ford 65mm better. But thats opinion. I ran a BBK 75 for a while on a KB setup.

Its a solid combo. do you plan on doing the work yourself?

considerations:

What exhaust are you running?

When you do the valvetrain it will be a little more involved setting up geometry, especially with the ped rockers, make sure you get a shim kit and you MAY need new pushrods. Lots of factors involved. Heads milled? Head gasket thickness etc..

Order up a new ford racing timing set and lifters.

Most of the milder cams will work well. Of course the custom is always best. Make sure its a cam optimized for 1.7 rockers. Example.. You dont want a cam with .550 on 1.6's and then use 1.7's. I liked the Crower 15511. Mild and gave ME good results.

You should check the PTV clearance.

Figure on a chip and tune for optimal driveability and performance.

This is cool! I am doing almost the exact same combo! (Great minds think alike, Demetrios.) The only real difference is that I ported the GT-40's a lot more than "mild". I will be having them milled, too. I live 30 miles from Don LaSota's shop, so I know where I'll get my tune. ;)

Let me know what your combo does. I won't get to mine until this winter, when the car gets put back in "storage".

Hey Matt,

I thought the 65mm would have been adequate but I ended up with a very good deal on the 70mm. It was only used for a few hundred miles.

I'm going to do the install myself. I've done all the work on my 94 and 66 so far, but this will be the first time doing any engine work so I'll be taking a week off from work when I do this. Just to be on the safe side. Not like I have a choice when it's my daily driver :)

Exhaust is in my sig. FRPP Headers, BBK Catted H and FRPP Cat Back.

Yeah, I figure setting up the valve train will probably be the hardest thing for me since I've never done it before. I also plan on picking up a timing set, lifters and maybe a water pump since everying will be apart. Boy, this stuff adds up!!

I've seen a lot of threads recommending a custom cam which would be the best choice. With my combo though, I figured I could get away with an off the shelf cam. I'm trying to do this on a very strick budget. I'll look into the Crower.

Thanks,
Demetrios

I poked around in some old data I had on iron head based combos

Maybe this can help
