Can I buy a 28 spline 9'' trac-loc pumpkin and bolt that directly into where my old 8.8 was, still using the same 28 spline axles and housing from the original 8.8?

the 9" diff loads into the rearend from the front, the 8.8 loads from behind, you have to remove a cover plate to get to it...

Are you sure you have an 8.8"???
If you have an 8", then you can weld the 9" center in between your tubes and load up a 28 spline chunk to match your 8" axles.
That is what Ford and Shelby did in 65 when they needed a 9" to fit HiPo cars.
