What fan should I run???

Hey guys\gals,

I have an 89 GT with a .030 over 302. I'm eventually going to get an aluminum radiator and electric fan. I've been looking at the Flexilite Black Magic Xtreme puller. It looks like it covers the whole radiator. Does anyone have one of these, and if so how well does it perform? Anyone have any fan recommendations?

I have been doing a lot of reading on the Taurus and Mark VIII fans......I think that is the route i will be gong, after a 3G upgrade of course!

Taurus and Mark 8 is your best bet. DC controler is also a very nice addition

Also mention where you live and what temps you see. Some folks can get away with less fan in milder climates. I hate to say what I'm about to (I hate when people phrase things like I'm about to), but I live in the desert and wouldn't run half the crap out there. It's a magical thing when it's 115* F (ambient *air* temps) and a zillion degree heat is rippling off the asphalt and through the radiator. . However, I think I have a decent feel for what fans do work in a hotter climate. Amongst those are the aforementioned 3.8L Taurus, Mark VIII, SN95 and MN12 fans.

A DcControl unit (like mentioned by Kevin) is the way to control it. Brian sells entire assemblies (fan and controller) as well, if someone doesnt want to spend time putting something together, trimming it and doing lots of wiring.

I have the Black Magic Extreme and really like it. It's more expensive than doing a setup that you have to put together, but it's very well designed. It comes with an adjustable fan controller that has an adjustable (tempurature) activation, as well as provisions for a manual activation as well as an AC override. The wiring was really simple and the aluminum brackets are all pretty nice looking. It also moves a ton of air at idle, my temp gauge doesn't budge when it clicks on.

Overall, it's a pretty good deal for less than $300, if you want minimal hassle.

i have a 10-1 347 and ive used spal, zirgo, perma cool etc and non of them can keep up to the 90-95 3.8 tarus fan, got it at the local u-pull it for 10$ and it has its own built in shroud, got a lot of extra fans though!

sorry to thread jack, but what kind of gains can u expect by switching to elec. fan over stock? just curious because i just installed the 3G alt...

I have a Black magic extreme in my car and like it alot. The stock fan and clutch would not cool the car at idle but the Extreme Black magic fan does. I also put in a 3G alternator and it's good to go. It was an expensive conversion with a new PA Performance alternator and wiring along with the fan but pays dividends with not worrying about overheating and a few horse gain. The fan covers the radiator well and has a cool aluminum bracket system to attach it to the radiator. Truely a direct fit installation. A mark 8 fan may be cheaper if you don't mind rigging stuff. The Extreme fan is the cleanest looking electric fan out.

Maybe only a few HP, but to keep the engine cooler is worth piece of mind.

Shorter belt and less to spin is always worth a little at the track.

My car use to run a little warm for my taste in 90 degree weather last summer, but I just installed a #3018 dccontrol integral fan/controller. The temp has yet to go past 175-180 in stop and go traffic. Brian makes a nice fan that blows a ton of air, and you can't beat the controller. I don't have any info on the other fans out there, but I can tell you that I am very happy with this one.

You will probably free up couple HP but the engine will spin up a lot faster with an efan. That was one of the things that was most noticeable.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. The engine doesn't seem to struggle so much at high RPM...but I also did underdrives at the same time.

And to second meangreen92LX, it just looks cool under the hood.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to go with the Black Magic Xtreme. It looks awesome and from what a few of you guys said it does a great job cooling. I've been looking hard at the "Jegs" brand aluminum radiator. My buddy is running this and it does well for him. The Xtreme fan should cover the "Jegs" brand rad shouldnt it?
