What makes our Stangs the bar?

Thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thought about this. As you all probably know a lot of the time someone has a quick car of a different make they measure it against a mustang. For example an import guy will race and beat a stang, which could be a Cobra badged V6 for all they know, and from that point on they will believe and profess that they beat mustangs. I visit some other import forums for kicks and because I'm in the business, build them sometimes, and like to see what's going on locally. Although not all of them, a lot of times there's talk about how they hate mustangs, or mustangs suck, mustang this or mustang that. Seems like we're the ones that are called out when it comes to something for a car to be measured to. Why not Vettes, Porsche or so on? It seems funny to me the amount of hate some import and even some domestic guys have towards mustangs, not even always hate directed at all fords, but a lot of the time it's something even specifically at mustangs. Even guys I know for a fact that are in real pieces of crap and have never owned or even driven a mustang call us out on our build quality and so on. At work so I didn't have time to think this paragraph out all the way but discuss...:D

Import Guy- MY car is ****ing fast now

Dumb Friend- What did you beat???

Import guy- Beat a mustang cobra!!!! The best part his exhaust sounded like a ricer!!!What a piece of ****!!!

Dumb Friend- Hell Yeah!!! I told you the fart can and the homemade 10in. intake would make a difference. So what you gonna do now??

Import Guy- Put SI stickers on my car!!!!

Dumb Friend- Woah man becareful!!! I did to my car and it was so fast I lost control while whooping on mustrang cobra to!!!

Import Guy- Woah!!!!! THats insane power dude!!!

I couldn't give a crap about what import drivers say about our cars. Their opinions are fueled by nothing but sheer ignorance. I see far more imports sitting broken-down on the side of the freeway than domestics, but thats just my observation. At our cars age, its not so much the initial build quality that matters the most, its how the car is maintained and taken care of that will ultimately make a car reliable or not. I've put about 20,000 miles on my car in the past year and a half, and had no serious issues that would have required some down-time. Never broke-down on the freeway or needed a tow.
I find that the guys who do all their own work have more of a broad respect for all brands, its the douch bags that get their parents to pay for a shop to install all their mods that seem to be more haters than anything else. I just avoid these people alltogether.
As far as our cars being the bar to compare to, well I suppose I'd take thats as a compliment. Means some of the trash talk has to be fueled by some form of envy

It might have something to do with the mustang being the most popular sports/pony car of all time. If there's an icon of american muscle, it is most certainly the mustang.

People driving 4 bangers usually have hate for the mustang, because chances are it was the first car that handed their ass to them on a plate.

I know I've done MY share of ass handing.............on..............plates?

Nevermind :nonono:

Running a car club that invites all makes and models.... I understand 100% where you are coming from.

Mustangs are the "bar" it seems here as well. Even for the vette owners. It's quite amusing actually. We don't have THAT many mustangs at the top of our yearly fastest list. But we do have a TON of them in the club.

Well said. :nice:

I had this conversation with a friend of mine a few months back.

We had come to the conclusion that, although a stock mustang isn't all that fast, they're not all that common either. Many of them have been modded to some extent.
Generally speaking, mustangs are quick cars, and because they're affordable, there's a lot of them. So if you're looking to measure up to something while booting around in your car in the night streets, chances are coming up to a mustang is fairly easy to find.
Plus most mustang owners won't hesitate to have some fun with their cars.
Unlike most vette owners, who will typically baby their car while driving it, it takes very little to entice a mustang owner to hammer on the throttle.

I also think that there's a lot of mustang variety too, there are the slow stock v6 stangers, then there's the hopped up twin turbo hand grenade for an engine mustang... so I think for people who like to match up their car to something, mustangs will always present a challenge.

Love them or hate them they are the standard...

maybe its the fact they have been built for soooo long and are always top sellers.

mabye its because the aftermarket is NUTS for them

could be that like said its an affordable american sports car that is very well rounded...in that it can hold 4 people, be a daily driver, get OK gas milage, great all around bang for the buck

Another true point stated above there is one that has left a bad taste in someones mouth.

No matter how die hard chevy or dodge you are you find those people saying "clean", "nice", "well put together", or "respectable" even if they see 10k roached out ones a day.

They for years and years and years have run in the mid 14's to mid 13's (or faster) fairly stock...lets be honest most highschool kids/gearheads in training/ricers find that a good goal.

Either way I have mine, the wife LOVES her and she will be enjoyed for a long time to come. I dont really notice anymore but every once and awhile you hear "I wanna mustang", "wish I still had mine", "Some day I will have one" and "look its a mustang" from little kids to SR. citizens. Even if I am not in my mustang I just smile.

I came across a Porsche and a Corvette on the way home from the track tonight and neither one of them would bite, also went by a fart canned Civic on my way to the track and he had nothing to offer either. I think that RR hood scares to many off sometimes.

probably because that's how most of us view imports.

anytime someone talks about an import what's the first thing that comes to your mind/out of your mouth?

"Those slow hondas with the big fart cans"

are there other cars running around that are slow and have big fart cans? of course....but we associate slow and annoyingly loud with the honda crowd because there are a lot of them running around.

well...since they've hit the market...there have been a LOT of mustangs on the street...and almost all of them are running pretty good times stock. Even some v6 stangs are running decent times. There are more on the street so everyone is more familiar with them and know that they are quick.

and come on...who has the best exhaust note?....even if it's not fast it still sounds fast.

I'm tired..and that prolly didn't make since...but yeah...

I think I'm having this issue too! That along with headers, no cats, and a loud cat-back. Ever since I got that hood though, no one ever wants to play. I doesn't bother me all that much though, it saves me from some trouble I might get myself into otherwise.

But yeah...the ricers never even think about it anymore. I kind of like the respect even if my times don't deserve it :rlaugh:

now that you mention it..I get that same thing with the rr hood.

I think it's more of that whistle sound though that keeps them at bay :D

Or maybe it's the sumped tank....

at least it looks fast..that way I don't have to actually run them and embarrass myself :)

Mustangs suck. I've had seven of them, so I know.

People driving 4 bangers usually have hate for the mustang, because chances are it was the first car that handed their ass to them on a plate.
Mustangs suck. And no, I haven't had one hand me my ass yet. Then again, I don't street race, so it's unlikely to happen anytime soon. See you on the roadcourse, and best of luck handing me my ass there... ;)

probably because that's how most of us view imports.
Mustangs suck. Errr, okay, some Mustang owners suck.

Well...

"Those slow hondas with the big fart cans"
Actually no.

Hmmm. That was fun. Did I mention ... Mustangs suck. :jester:

Really, the whole attitude thing goes both ways. I see asshats on the STI forum. And I see asshats here. Judging other people buy the car they choose to drive is silly.

I just say it's slow because...well....
no dyno or track numbers yet :(

I have a dyno day on saturday so I'll finally know what I'm putting out.

I'm still trying to get a good tune on the meth injection.....but it's kinda tough to do without a dyno to actually see the hp/tq numbers change.

my heads are really holding me back too...stupid windsor jrs :bang:

Thanks for the compliment though :D

ok...soo....you're an exception....

congrats :D

really though, that's what I've gathered from most people....even import owners.......Whenever someone starts talking about a honda.....they immediately start talking about hondas with the exhaust. Could just be the area...we seem to have an over-abundance of "10 second cars"......

it all comes down to personal preference.

domestic guys have their pride as "big bad muscle cars"

import guys have their pride as "more efficient cars that can run circles around a big V8..especially on roadcourses..with half the engine size"

the important thing is.....we enjoy the same hobby. I have no problem wrenching with an import/chevy/whatever else guy....as long as they're not dousches and not completely close minded. Most sti/evo guys I know are pretty cool people

example: some assclown that runs up to a mic at a car show and says that camaros are the all mighty and anything else should get the eff out......:puke:

Ahh, speaking of which ... there is a local guy with an 80's Camaro that he thinks is pretty hot. And get this ... he even has an honest-to-god mullet! The real deal!

Unfortunately he's right. IIRC the Camaro runs an 8.x quarter mile . But still ... a mullet? That's just wrong... :jester:

nothin beats the iroc-z/mullet combo I saw at a mall down in augusta, GA...I almost decided to slam on my brakes and turn into the gas station he was at so I could take pictures....

I could have put it on the "tourist attraction" sign....

not knocking GA...we get similar stuff here in SC....
