Another n/a 5.0 in the 12s...VIDEO inside

Hey all, I have been a member here for a little bit now, but I haven't really posted anything. In fact, I think this might be my first post. Anyway, I have a 1993 Reef Blue LX Coupe 5-speed and just this past year bought it with around 34,000 original miles. Still has the original paint, factory rims were mint; it even had the stock air box with the air silencer (don't see that too much anymore). The car already had ancient FMS shorties, a good 'ol Flowmaster mid-pipe back exhaust, FMS plug wires, and the FMS silicone radiator hose kit. That was about it. My father and I finally couldn't stand it anymore and decided to throw on some modifications:) First were UDPs, x-pipe, bumped timing, a chip, and a nice large radiator. Picked up a good amount of power and torque, but we wanted to break 300 to the wheels and of course clip off some 12 sec times. :)

So we decided to throw on some TFS TW heads with 1.6 Harland Sharp RRs, E303 cam, Mac 1 3/4" LTs w/ 3" out to custom 3" x-pipe, to 2.5" Borla XR1 mufflers to some nice 3" tailpipes, GT40 upper/lower intake with phenolic spacer, 30lb inj, 190lph fuel pump, 65mm TB, C&L 73mm MAF, large open conical air filter, Mark VIII electric fan, 130amp SN95 alt, and a re-tuned chip - that's the engine mods. Next was the suspension - Steeda sub frame connectors, Strange 10-way Adj shocks struts on all 4 corners, FMS B-springs, CHE LCAs, BBK UCAs, and additional bushings around the car to tighten things up. Of course, I had to put in a short shifter so I went with the MGW, and we also put bushings on the cross member to get rid of the tranny twist. And finally, some shoes - 17x9 American Racing Black Bullits with 245 45 R17 Firestone Ovals on the front and 275 40 R17 Mickey Thompson E.T. Streets on the rear :)

Took it out to the track for the first time and ran 12.8@108 for the cutting 1.8 60's. Come to find out later, we were only making about 290whp and running way lean. So we got her richened back up, added a littler more timing through chip and made 305whp and 336wtq. Then took her out last Saturday and cut a best time of [email protected] with a 1.74 60' :) Still had the front sway bar on, spare in the back, full interior, A/C and P/S - just tires and shocks adjusted. It probably weighs close to 3200 with me in it, but I don't for sure.

Here is a video - http://www.lundracing.com/videos/5oh_12-49_at_110.mov (about 4MB).

Anyway, just figured I would share it. Enjoy :) I will try to get some pics of the car up soon.

good question, I forgot to mention that. The car has a 5-lug conversion it...so it has 28-spline 5 lug axles in the rear and the posi is stock and I have 3.73s - I should have mentioned that, my bad. You can kind of tell from the video when I launch that it hooks, then one side lets loose - the clutch packs are shot already lol...so I probably need some carbon fiber ones or just put a full locker in it. I also forgot to mention that it has a FMS aluminum driveshaft.

thanks...yea, there is more left in it. I have a feeling with slicks and skinnies on some lightweight rims versus those boat anchors, and a fixed posi trac, I could probably cut a 1.6 or less 60' and run 12.2s at about 111 on a 28in tall rear tire. However, I wanna see what it does with 75-100 shot of spray first :D Shoot for 11s on how it sits now.

The car is mean on the street, the tires seem to hook up nicely. :)

why would you have a 3" midpipe with a 2.5" catback?

well, I was on a budget and found a good deal on headers. They happened to be ginormous with 1 3/4" primaries and a 3" collector, which is probably too big for the setup, but I figured it couldn't hurt, and it doesn't - made over 300hp to the wheels on a mustang dyno and over 330 ft/lbs of torque. I didn't want to go 3" all the way out because it is kind of overkill - I wanted to maintain a little torque with the back pressure created from a "bottle neck" but I didn't want to sacrifice extra top end power if I had the chance to have it with the 3" section. So I kept the 3 inches in the mid-pipe where the crossover is for maximum flow, then stepped it down after that. Some people disagree with staggered exhaust setups...but numbers don't lie.

Nice times! I like the fact that you concentrated on the whole combo and not just the engine. A locker unit will serve you well and they're not bad on the street at all (ask me how I know!) Too bad you're in PA and I'm in MA. We'd have some good races together!

Thanks man. Yea, we would, but with 4.30s, I think I might have trouble catchin ya from a dig :p I do need a locker, but I will probably end up doing it the budget way and just replacing the clutch packs. The car only has 38,000 miles on it now, so the trac-loc can't be beat too bad. We will see though...next up is juice, both tires spinning or not, I just can't help myself :D

Here are some pics of the motor and part of the car....I need to take some outside shots while it is nice out.

The car doesn't have the stock airbox anymore, but it didn't make a difference in hp without it. The open air filter just cleaned up the MAF curve, so it seems to run a little better driveablity-wise.

Nice and with the a/c:Nice:

Looks like a very well together combo, your type of combinations are the ones I like! Still got the accessories and make the power, with 'old parts'. Most on here say the e303 is :notnice: and is outdated. And you need 'big parts'...

You proved them all wrong in one trip to the dyno/track:)

Any weight reduction? Race weight?

What pushrods/length did you go with?

Lems

I will have to get back to you on that one...I don't know the full specs on the pushrods. But I do know they are hardened.

Thanks man. Yea, we had to go with E303 because we have oversized valves and we didn't want to notch the pistons if it had more lift. The E303 luckily keeps that lift at a good enough level so the valves don't hit :) Not to mention, it sounds good :D

As for weight reduction...none. Still had the factory spare in the back and ALL the sway bars on the car, front and rear seats, and full 17x9 rims (boat anchors). The only thing the car does not have that is on the factory serpentine is the Smog Pump - but who keeps those anyway? :p

I ran the edel package --Heads, intake E cam

1.72 RR's
70mm tbod egr
75 bullit maf
24lb injector
bbk 1_5/8 lt's
Mac chamber
2_1/2 ultra flo's dumped
3.55 gear
27 slick borrowd
2.95 1st gear didn't help

12.501 @ 108.95 with a 1.77 60ft... My car bog'd with the 27 and 3.55 combo

Put it this way, I threw an S-trim at the car with 8lbs and 24 lbs of injector with one 255 intank pump

running out of fuel and having to shut down the car it still made 427.4 to the rear tire on Anderson's dyno.

Upgrading to a bigger 80 mm maf, 42's, external 255 pump and a PMS I have yet to get the car back to the dyno, but I am sure it would be better yet.

In either case, it's cool to see another reef coupe that is nicely done running respectable times.

Oh ya, with the blower, the car still gets 22 on the hiway at about 75mph with the cruise set. That wasn't with the air on.

Mine just turned 84 on the clock.

Thanks bro. Your car sounds like it would be one quick machine. I'd love to have a blower or turbo on this thing right now.

I think I will see how far I can go with some juice...then next year I want to throw a built 4V motor in the car with a 2.8KB HO...a motor I have always loved in the mustang body style I enjoy - not mention this car will be a heck of a lot lighter than a SN95 Chassis. :D

By the way, ran the car again this evening and I think I am going to have to replace the clutch here soon, seems to be smelling after getting hot now from hard shifting - which means it is probably slipping a bit...I definitely know nitrous will roast it - too much torque.
