what am i better off getting...

1. one JL 12"
2. one REALLY nasty 15"
3. two JL 12"s

the reason i ask is because my friend has a jeep cherokee and has one JL and it puts out sooo much bass...but i want more than that, i just dont want it to be too much bass that is sounds bad, or too much bass it shakes my car apart lol. Cuz lets be real, there isnt a whole lotta space inna foxbody so maybe one nice sub would work out well, i just dont wanna build a system, then have to rebuild it because im not satisfied.

so for you guys that have systems, do you wish you went with more bass, and if not, post ur set-up.

thanks guys

I have a JVC KD-G420 CD/MP3 Deck: IPOD Ready,x2 5.25 Pioneer's x2 5x7 Infinty's in the rear, and than...

x2 Rockford 10's Stage 1 Subs w/975 Watt Amp.

I'm content with my set up expect the Pioneer's which are getting switched to Infinity's or Polk.

TURKEY: do they sound real good? usually i dont like 10s, yea i know its said they hit harder but 12s are just soooo deep....im just trying to get a general consensous of what everyones done or wish they had done differently. and if u dont mind me asking, how much u pay for that setup?

thanks for the post tho, maybe i will go with 10s who knows, i'd still prefer to keep it with either one giant sub or 2 smaller ones, we'll see....anyone else?

I have one JL 10W3v2 and it pounds pretty good. A buddy of mine has a 15" Audiobahn and it's rediculously loud. When he has it halfway my whole face vibrates from the bass. I would say that a 12" should be more then enough. Just make sure the amp you're powering it with is enough for the setup.

ive got a single 12" mtx sub and amp, i was going more for sound quality than quantity while still keeping a bit of a budget, and this with the 6.5" and 5x7 polks works out pretty good.

If you listen to a lot o rock/metal with double bass drums and so forth, I HIGHLY suggest 2 12s in a ported box. They alternate bass and sound rediculous. If you listen to most anthing else any three of those options will be plent of bass for a stang.

I believe they sound nice. The only thing holding it back in the front speakers. I didn't go all out, it's a Mustang after all. And the best part of owning a Stang is listening to the engine and exhaust. :nice:

I ended up paying just over $700 for the subs, box, amp, cd player, and the two Infinity's.

I have a ****ty JVC deck, polk audio 5x7s in the back, pioneer 3-way 6.5s in the front w/ pioneer tweeters mounted in the dash. + 1 old school 50x1 mono pioneer and 1 ****ty 12. It sounds real nice. Doesnt bang up the whole block but you know its no factory system either. I wouldn't do more than 1 12'' just based on weight savings alone.

I think 1 JL will work fine for you as long as the encloser is bulid and sealed correctly. A properly bulit and sealed encloser can make a bad sub sound good. JL makes some of the best sounding subs in my opinion, but they are very picky about a correct encloser. Pay close attention to inside box volume and correct sound dampening.

But you cannot by anymeans easily compare the sound of a Sub in a Jeep Cherokee to one in a FOX body. The vehicles have completly different resonant levels not to mention interior volume. The Sub will probably sound (feel) louder in your car just from the less interior volume.

I had an all POLK system with old school PPI amps and a Apline head unit. But car is in the rework mode so it is not currently in the car. Not sure it will go back the same, we will see.

If you have a hatchback get two 10's, I tried out two 12's and there was way too much reverb and rattled the crap out of my hatch. I am running two Boston G2 10's and they hit hard enough...

it's loud as hell inside, but not so much outside, which in my oppinion is good...less attention from cops....

Alright well based off what you guys said I'm thinking more towards one 12", but who knows its not for sure.

I listen to mostly old school/underground rap, so that's what my system would be "geared" for.

My cheap-arsed pre-loaded box with 8" subs (if they can even really be considered "subs") sounds decent to me, but KMFDM's "Hau Ruck" CD practically destroys it, and the crappy little 300-watt Jensen amp shuts down too easily. One of these days, I might upgrade to a pair of 10's; I don't care to hear all the boom-ba-boom crap, I just want to be able to feel the double-bass hits and maybe hear the bottom half of my kinda weird stuff (KMFDM, Type O Negative, NIN, Cruxshadows, Nightwish, etc.).

From all I've heard, either a pair of 10's or a single quality 12 is good enough for most folks; anything bigger than 12's is overkill, and more than 2 of anything is just ridiculous.

EDIT: One of these days I'll get around to pulling all of that crap outta the Notch and seeing how it sounds in the TurdBird. Not having any interior sound insulation at all is kinda counterproductive to having any kind of a stereo. :)

I had (back in high school--been a while) a pair of Kicker Competition 10" subs in my '86 vert, in a sealed box, fed by a JL Audio 400 watt amp. Hard rock beats through it would punch hard, but there was not any stupid boooom crap. It was just good, crisp, strong bass.

Right now, I just have one JL Audio 12" in a sealed box, powered by a cheap Jensen 300 watt amp (cheap power is nowhere near valuable, clean power) in my DD and it does just fine.

If you want hard beats and deep bass, go for more power (again, you don't have to have the gain up all the way just because you have the power) and a sealed box.

If you want boomy bass, go for a ported or bandpass box. You won't have to have as much wattage because of the efficiency in air exchange, but you lose sound crispness.

IMO, I'll never run anything but sealed enclosures for car audio. Home audio, on the other hand.... :D

Im out of the whole loud as hell bass phase. Loud subs destroy cars, hello water leaks. This kid I know had to get rid of his Tahoe b/c he got water leaks and rust everywhere because the bass actually shook the car apart. Plus listening to music with bass that loud just isnt cool to me, you cant even hear the music. I have one 12 inch MA Audio that hits decent but isnt rediculously loud, just enough bass to make it not sound like a cheap boom box lolol.

:Word:

If it makes my hair vibrate, it's too much. I hate my buddy's high-dollar setup - 1000w Crossfire amp, two 12" RF DVC's, and some miscellaneous brand-name tweeters and such - because all you hear going down the road is BOOOOOOOM-BA-BOOOOOOM with this obnoxious hissing in your ears that (I think) would be the cymbals or guitar scratches. Totally kills the music. Loud is only good up to a certain point - then it's just noise.

i was running 4x 12" JL Audio's with 2 digital Alpine MD500 amps in my hatch. I sold them. Them and the box probably wieghed a couple hundred pounds, which is why i took them out, and didn't replace them with anything. I now prefer to hear my exhaust, and the music i do play never gets turned up anymore anyways.
I see you like rap type music. I'd suggest either 2 10" subs, or 1 QUALITY 12" sub. That kind of music has nice bass, but i found that only good subs could make it sound decent.

Ha that's crazzzzyyyyy that his tahoe had a system that in the end caused rust!!

Wade95/cobrakiller: ARE THOSE THREE 12'S I SEE IN THE BACK OF YOUR HATCH!?

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to go with one super quality twelve, probably JL too.

it just seems like two 12s are too impractical, which is NOT what I'm lookin for anytime soon, as its my DD.

Thanks again for all the help, as I said I'm pretty sure I've decided on one 12" but I'm definitely down to listen to someone elses opinions/comments.
