i just want to know what i have to do to change my stock gears to 3.73 ford racing gears

you buy them....then take them to a trans/differential shop and indicate to them you'd like to have them swap out the gear set. That job is DEFINATELY not a beginner freindly job....get it done by an experienced individual.

While I agree with Dman, I did them myself when i was 15 with my dad and niether of us had experience. We borrowed a dial indicator guage from a shop to makesure it had the proper backlash, and we used this stuffcalled prussian blue to isnure that the ring and pinion gears were contacting solidly. But yes if you have to ask what needs to be done, I'd take it to a shop.

You dont. spend the $100 and get a shop to do it. Buy the gears, and get them to rebuild the differential at the same time.

Last time I figured it, a gear swap around these parts ran close to a grand, including parts. But then, just about everything seems to be more expensive out here for no good reason...

And as the above said ... don't try this at home, kids.

A grand??? That is way to much. The most around here is $200.

Take it to a shop that way you don't have to worry about the backlash and contact pattern.

well here in red deer (alberta), i called the ford dealership about this. they told me about $600-$700 for parts (just a frpp 3:73 gearset and shims etc, no traclok rebuild or anything!!). i was like oh really! then i asked how much the install would be, and they told me around $800. well needless to say, i told them i could get FRPP gears from the net for like $170, and they laughed and said they weren't ford, and real ones are way more expensive... needless to say, i told them they are retarded and that they can go f**k themselves.... $1600 for a gearswap!!

I didmine for 250 installed myself(including fluid, shims and all new bearings), 2 years later I have no whining or anything, but now I have to rebuild my trac lok, as it went out since I swapped my gears.

First, you go buy the 3:73 gears, a gear install kit, and a traction lok rebuild kit. Then you make a phone call to your friendly trusted mechanic and pay 200-500(depending which shop you call) him to install all of it!

oh and you gotta buy a tail shaft gear(depending on your year) and a speedo gear if you want to have the correct speed on your speedometer!

A dealership charging $1600 for gears and labor is crazy.I charge $175 to install gears in my area....

Well, the $1k figure I estimated would include all of the cost for the gears, related parts, fluids, AND the labor. If you were to do it all, yourself, it would probably be 1/3 of that ... but I was assuming that (no offense to the original poster) if someone has to ask what to do to swap from stock gears to 3.73's, they probably don't have the mechanical know-how yet to try to tackle the job on their own and, thus, they'd have to pay someone else to put 'em in.

Me, I'm pretty handy with a wrench, but even I wouldn't want to screw around with trying to install gears, myself. Sure, I could read a book and/or watch a video or two on it and probably do it successfully ... but I'm lazy.

i did it all by myself, it was a pita at the time. But actually it was pretty easy. besides everything above that was said which you needed, you also need an assortment of tools if you would wanna tackle it yourself, if you like the working on cars majority of the stuff you need will be used alot. but good luck
