How much do junkyard T5 transmissons sell for?

Looking for a possible junkyard tranny to rebuild and put in my car. My tranny is making some pretty bad whining noises and it's my DD, so I will need something else to rebuild so I can just swap them out. What would I expect to pay for a tranny? What are they worth?

Turkey Sammich will know. He just put a junk yard tranny in his beat up stang. It has (the tranny) 150,000 miles on it.

Actually it was NOT a junkyard transmission.

I bought it off of a guy that bought a 91 LX with 117K on it. The guy was just going to do an H/C/I on the 302, but decided, that he wanted more power and a Tremec instead of a WC T5.

Now, to answer the question on this thread... A used T5's can be bought for as cheap as $100 in a junkyard. The local junkyard where I lived wanted around $140. However, when buying used it's a hit or miss. Good luck :nice:

Just be sure that you know which T-5 you're getting - if it's a 4-banger or a V-8 version. You can use either one, but for the four-banger T-5, you'll need to use a different pilot bearing (search around a little and I'm sure the part # is still listed in a couple of threads - IIRC, it went into an odd 80's Ford Ranger, like a turbo diesel or something along that line).

Autozone sells "used" (basically junkyard) 4-banger trannies for $200 plus shipping. I've seen T-5's listed for as cheap as $50 on Craigslist ... but again, you'll have to know what you're buying before you go trying to plug that sucker in there. (Maybe bring along a spare pilot bearing to see if it fits over the input shaft with any slop, or if it's a snug fit...?)

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to do some looking around before long. I would rebuild the one I have now, but I don't know how long I want to be out of commission.

I uploaded a video recorded with my phone, so turn your sound up to be able to hear the audio. It shows basically how bad my whine is getting. I think it's louder in the video than in real life, but you get the idea.

If it's whining, don't rebuild it, it's done.
Small parts rebuild is minor, synchros, blocking rings things like that.
You probably need a main or input shaft, which a t5 is NOT worth.

find one that grinds lightly or pops out of gear, and have it rebuilt.

Nice pseudo-charger whine ya' got going, there. :nice: :D

Doesn't sound like an input shaft bearing to me. Mine had more of a rurr-rurr-rurr-rurr pulsating/growling sort of sound when it was going out (shaft was warped/bent, either from abuse or prior idiot's install during AOD-to-T5 swap). A hardened input shaft for my T-5 only ran right about $100 shipped from Hanlon Motorsports, and the bearing wasn't all that much extra - knocked 'er down onto the shaft with a closely-sized steel pipe, a block of wood, and a deadblow hammer. I wouldn't consider a T-5 wasted due to an input shaft; a MAIN shaft, however, might be a different matter, altogether.

Ever drained/changed the fluid to see if you've got metal shavings floating about?

Yes, I changed the fluid just tonight. The old fluid was kind of dark and might have had a metalic look to it.

So what the hell does it mean when every gear but 4th is whining loudly? 4th gear doesn't make a peep.

Also, what are the difference between the V8 and 4 cylinder transmissions besides the different pilot bearing? Are they weaker or what?

Means the trans is a pile of junk, like i said earlier.
My did the same thing, and then one day, boom, all i had was 4th gear.
Call hanlon, they will tell you on the phone that it's gonna take about $700-$800 to fix your trans (parts and labor). When a trans that pops out of gear or grinds would take half of that.
I've been through it, and my buddy fixes them at his shop, a trans whining that severe just isn't worth the money.

God damnit. I called every salvage yard near me and I got immediate "nope don't have any". A couple of them acted like they actually looked though and a couple told me they are "rare" and hard to find.
