I am trying Remove my Front control Arms to replace them but i cannot remove the front Control Arm-to-K-member bolt because the power steering rack is in the way. I removed the 2 bolts holding the steering rack to the K-Member but it still wont pull forward....what do i need to do to make the rack move forward. I have taken the bolt almost all the way out but the steering rack is blocking its way comming out. Is something else holding the rack on? Do i need to remove the hoses to the power steering pump?

...help....

Yeah, you have to disconnect the steering shaft.

Do not fully remove the clamp bolt that holds the steering shaft... Just loosen it.

Now would be a great time to install new rack bushings or at least lube the stock ones.

I removed the bolt that connects to the steering shaft to the steering rack but it still wont brake free. I know that the steering is the reason it wont come off because it comes off on the passenger side just fine...but not the drivers side.

...should i just pry at steering rack till it comes off because there is no bolts holding it on.

..and what should i lube the steering rack bushings with?

Yeah those rubber bushings that are (I believe) between the rack and pinion and k-member can be like glue.

I took a big screwdriver and wedged it out.

It take a bit of muscle to get it off.

Be sure to tie the rack with zipties to the swaybar so it won't drop down when you do release it.

the stock racks are ok to replace it with.... if you wanted to switch to a manual rack from flaming river that is a possiblity. your would love the weight of the power assisted rack, power steering pump and lines. but steering will be more difficult.

i needed to remove the control arms this past weekend to install Steeda balljoints and just pryed the ****er up and out of the way (not recommended)

kind of a bitch so actually loosening the steering shaft and pulling the rack all the way out is probably your best bet

steering rack

I removed my controll arms front rear but I should of read up on more how to's because I tore the tire rod boot and oil powersterring oil poured out. Luckily ford sells just the boot to replace it for $45.00 Since iam remove the steering rack and shaft Iam going to install Bassani ceramic coated equal length headers . Iam also got the MM IRS grip box and upgrading all bushings to delrin.

My other question is I have never done headers before can I drop the k member by using floor jack and another to hold up motor?

SRT, take a crowbar and pry the steering connector piece off the shaft. It may take some force but you wont hurt anything. Then the rack should slide right off the 2 posts of the K member in the forward direction. Lube those up before you slide it back on and you should be good to go.
