Bubbye Sadie
The guy came to pick her up Saturday while I was at work. It was really weird coming home and not having her in the driveway, but it's for the best. I did get the tranny out (complete with neutral safety switch) and I also had to swap her driveshaft over to Murphy - Murphy's U-joints were bad (VERY VERY bad*) and it was easier to just swap out the whole shaft than replace just the U-joints so that's another part of Sadie that's now on Murphy (plus Sadie's ignition coil**).
Sorry again for taking so long on those parts requests, I've just been incredibly busy. But we were planning on going on vacation for 2 weeks in October. I had already requested and gotten the 2 weeks off, but my dad just found out his vacation is getting cancelled so I'm now going to use those 2 weeks to do some major work on Murphy. So while I'm at it, I'll have time to dig through the shed and see what all I have.
Footnotes:
* About a week ago, Murphy started klunking loudly when put into gear and vibrating horribly at highway speeds (felt like I was driving on the rumble strip on the shoulder, but I wasn't). So I swapped out the driveshaft w/u-joints from Sadie, like I said. Looked at Murphy's u-joints and all the bushing were completely gone, there wasn't a bit of grease under the caps (just powdered rust), and all the bearing under one of them had completely desintegrated.
Yeah, I think that was the problem.
** I'm really proud of myself for this one so I have to share. About 3 weeks ago, Murphy started missing & backfiring really bad. Got to the point where I couldn't even drive him to work. So I told dad and while I was at work, he took a look and did some tweeking on the carb. I got home, took it for a test drive and it idled better, but 2 blocks down the road, it started missing & backfiring again. Got back home and dad said, "I don't know, you'll just have to take it somewhere and have it looked at." I didn't want to pay a fortune for someone to look at it so I got thinking and remembered that the last time he was missing & backfiring, it was because one of the nuts on the coil had worked itself loose. I checked the wires and they were all fine so I thought, maybe it's the coil itself going bad. Swapped out the coil with Sadie's, and he runs like a dream now. So I was able to figure it out all by myself even after dad gave up
Dad later told me that this is the very first time he's ever seen a coil
going bad; usually, they just quit working.
