I just wanted to say how much I benefited from changing my rag joint on my 68 coupe...I hsd probably 5"-6" of slop in my steering, and after changing my rag joint with a poly one from laurel mountain I probably have about 2" of play now...I am very pleased with this upgrade and it was only $30. I would just like to suggest that anyone with a substantial amount of play in their steering try this before you shell out the big $$ fr a steering box, you might be suprised with the outcome...

Last month or maybe the month before someone posted a universal join that could replace the rag joint completely. Eliminates slop and gives you more room in the engine bay. I was thinking about ordering one but I never got around to it and now I don't have a link to the thread anymore. I'll search for it one day when I'm feeling not lazy lol.

When I was replacing the rag joint the thought did cross my mind that it could be eliminated...thats interesting that someone did actually replace it. I would love to see pictures of it...

I have a bunch of play in mine, was underneath today looking to see where it was coming from. Seems like it is in the ball joint of the pitman arm is worn out and is where all the slop is coming from. Rag joint might be adding some too, but am going to replace the pitman first. Anyone ever done one of these? Easy swap or PITA? Are they all the same or is one vendor better than the other?

Do you have power steering ? Pitman arms are typically a non-wear part.

Yes, I have power steering. The slop is coming from the connection between the pitman and the control valve. Is there a bushing or something there that wears out? I didn't take it apart yet to get a good look. Does the pitman for power steering cars have a ball joint on the end? Am going to do some forum searching on the subject...
