i just had this mini starter installed in May 2006... a Denso Type CHM Brand with a 4.0:1 gear-reduction ratio, 1.9hp, and 222 ft.lbs. cranking power. the mechanic selected this brand.

i turn the ignition and all i hear is a single click from the starter or maybe something else (solenoid??). i thought i had a dead battery, so i replaced it with a new battery. i heard the same single click. is the starter gone? is this usually how long they last?

Check the starter solinoid. Often times it goes bad and won't pass a current. You can jump the post with a wire or remote starter(be sure the ingnition key is in the On position. If it stars that's the problem. If not, either that Starter is bad or your battery is too low.

ok, i changed the solenoid and the same problem... one click. so, i'm going to take out the starter and get it tested.

questions: i've changed the battery cables, which are now 2/O. the old cables had black as positive. can a thicker cable draw too much power to the starter and work/blow the motor of the starter? is this the high resistance that Isky is talking about?

starter is bad. got it tested... turned like a snail. so, i'll get it rebuilt somewhere. anyone have pointers/comments. thanks.

EDIT: is it true, hi-torque mini starters cannot be rebuilt?!
