Is it worth getting a transmission cooler? Also does a tranny cooler hurt hp? I heard someone say that it does. I asked the guy at a local garage and he said it’s not worth putting one in.

A tranny cooler is a great mod for an automatic. It will extend the transmission life. Some vehicles come from the factory with tranny coolers. Wise investment IMO.
I can't see how a cooler would hurt your hp either. If anything, it may help by not heating up the transmission so much.

For an automatic it's probably the best mod you can do.
Heat kills transmissions.
I'm going to be putting one on my 03 Automatic in a couple of weeks. I've done them before on other cars, but never on a Ford so I am still investigating. I'm also looking at a tranny temp gauge as well.
The mechanic just wants to sell you a transmission when yours dies.

no, the mechanic doesnt realize that your stang's tranny isn't like every other one he sees, yours is running 25-40 degrees higher than normal on a regular basis. He doesnt realize our crappy tranny heat exchanger core is actually in/on the side of the radiator in some cases heating up the already hot transmission fluid. Yes plz do put on a tranny cooler; and when you can, switch to Mercon V or Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. You'll thank us when you dont need a rebuild at 105k

105k ha try 55k, I had to have mine rebuilt last week for $1,060. I also had them install 3.73s at the same time.

Whoever told you that a transmission cooler robs hp doesn't know what they're talking about, so I wouldn't take their advice on anything else when it comes to your Mustang.
Yes, a transmission cooler is VERY much worth investing your money into. Heat is the number one killer of automatic transmissions. Heat breaks down the mercon, and once the mercon is gone, that is when the wear and tear begins. A transmission cooler will reduce the transmission fluid temperature, and will alow for the fluid to last longer, and allow for better protection and lubrication.
Since no one else mentioned it, I think it's wise to inform you to only use Mercon V or superior fluid in your transmission. Stay away from base Dexron/Mercon III, and avoid "off the shelf" name companies. If I had to recommend a companies transmission fluid, I would recommend Amsoil universal synthetic. It's about the best out there, and I've never had any problems with it. Be sure to use the Motorcraft transmission filters. I wouldn't trust anything else.
If you're really serious about extended tranmission life, then I recommend getting a deep sum transmission pan that will increase the fluid capacity of the transmission.

Getting back to tranny pans, I was thinking of getting the Frpp finned pan which they say takes an extra 2 quarts or so of fluid, which is good in my book.
Does the dipstick or filter or anything else need to be changed if installing this pan?

Nope, it should bolt right up, and the stock disptick should work fine with it. The only note of caution I will throw your way is when/if you decide to change pans be sure to reuse the stock plastic gasket. It's way better in terms of quality and durability than those cheap aftermarket gaskets a lot of companies put with their aftermarket pans.+1

I've seen you post in other tranny cooler posts, you should be well edumacated by now
the tci 438000 pan comes with a 1/8" npt port for a gauge sender and the filter that has an extended pickup. That's going on my 4r70w next fluid/filter change.
