The 4-cyl T5 has weaker internals. Probably wouldn't hold up behind a 351 but it would be worth a shot if the 4 cyl car is cheap enough,

Contrary to popular belief, that is not true. The only difference between a 5.0 T-5 and a 2.3 T-5 is input shaft throwout bearing diameter and gear ratios. All you friend has to do is get the right bushing for the T-5 and a bellhousings and he will be fine. He may however break it prematurely due to the extra torque from a 351. If it's modified, chances are greater. The reason for the lower torque rating is from the gear ratio.

The gearing and input shaft are whats different.You can mount the 4 cyl. T-5 on the v8 bellhousing,they use the same casing.I don't know about anyone else,but I ran 11.50's on my old coupe with a 4 cyl t-5 and never had troubles with it. Just don't power shift it and get a good aftermarket shifter!!
