computer techs, please help--laptop problems

hoping you guys could help:

my laptop's lcd went bad. you can still see it, but there are a bunch of vertical lines running up and down on the screen.

i took it apart today to see if the connector was just loose, but no dice.

i'm thinking it can be one of two things: 1. the lcd itself, or the 2. inverter board the lcd connects to.

anyone have any experience with this sort of problem?

i doubt that would do anything if the lines are there all the time

my moms laptop has had a red vertical line in it for the past 2years or so  kinda annoying

The LCD inverter board generally just controls the backlight. If you were having brightness problems I would suspect the inverter. It sounds like you have either a bad video card or LCD. I would say it's probably in the LCD. You can test the video card by plugging in a monitor.

well, if i have to replace anything it's the least i can do--the laptop was free, so i can't complain. just wanna figure out what's wrong w/ the monitor and fix it.

looks like i can get an lcd for about $200 off ebay... anyone know of a better, more reliable place to score them for a decent price?

but yeah, gonna try Mike's suggestion when i get home tonight--hopefully that'll narrow it down.

thanks, Reddy, but i'm gonna stick w/ this one.

even though the battery life is crap, i can still use it for everything i do (from tweecing the car to the webdesign, image editing, audio production, and gaming).

it's a hp zd8000, btw.

i have 2 hp laptops . certain series are notorious for having screen problems. both of mine have screen issues, one doesnt display at all, the other comes and goes. as stated above, when plugged up to a external monitor the display is fine.

i wanted a new lcd for mine but sorta costly. its a gamble, but you could always find your model on ebay ( with a claimed good lcd and other parts ) for a reasonable, or maybe a cheap price and use the parts to repair yours. just make sure from some of the other guru's its your lcd.
