I'm looking for information on those who've gone from 302 to 331, or even a read up about it.
Thanks :SNSign:
Thanks :SNSign:
fixxoredMy brother did it last summer. He builds engines everyday for his job, so he knows what he's doing. Ten years ago, he built a 306 with ported & polished '69 351W heads (with Chevy valves), a solid lifter camshaft and a dual quad setup. His tranny was a T-5 and the rearend was an 8.8 with a Detroit Locker setup and 4.30 gears. That combination was good for consistent 12.50's @ 108-109 and a best of 12.49 @ 110. It's power output was 311 rwhp and 287 rwt.
Last summer, he ordered a D.S.S. 331 rebuild kit and installed it into a .060 over 302 block, creating a 337 cubic inch monster. Combined with AFR 185's, an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold and a Holley 650, the car picked up 78 more horsepower. He's now making 387 rwhp and 362 rwt and the car runs consistent 11.60's @ 117-118 mph, with the same rear gears (he also upgraded the T-5 to a Tremec 3550.)
That extra 78 horsepower gave him 8 more 10ths in the quarter mile and 10 more miles per hour. It's the reason I'm now saving my money for a stroker!
I'm throwing around the idea of doing it next year, then doing H/C/I after. And hoping I can get around the ball park of 300. Than add a zex kit to finish her up.
My overall goal is to be around 350-400 when I'm done.
With a H/C/I and the rite components with a good tune you should net 320 RWHP.
A 100 shot of the good stuff should put you a little over your goal.
I just finished mine, still breaking it in. Feels *very* strong and I haven't even really mashed the pedal yet...breaks the tires loose with about 1/2 pedal. I'd definitely recommend it
Very cool.
About how long was the install and the price tag, if you don't mind me asking?
