Does anyone know of a source for a deep groove V-belt pulley for a 3G alternator? I read somewhere that the v groove belt slips on the 3G when it gets over 100 amps. I don't really want to change over to a double groove or serpentine just yet. Just trying to cover all the bases before I begin the swap. Thanks.

I did an 3g swap in my 77 f250, i used the stock pulley and all worked out fine. its been in there for 2 years now. that alternature is amazing, i set it up with a load tester on the battery and amp clamp on the alt and at idel that alt puts out almost the whole 130 amps of power. i run 7 100 watt lights (58 amps) on my truck plus stereo when out mudding around and the alt keeps up no problem. do you have the wiring schematic to wire it in proper? you need a resistor for the stator wire remember.

my alignment worked out perfect the only problem i had was my first belt (dayco, the one with the ridges ontop) wore out fast and flaked apart, i then went to a gatorback or something like that it is has been fine for a year and a half, I tensioned my belt to the stock specs for 77 with a belt tensioner gauge and i have had no slippage that iv heard or scene on the belt and i do run some load on it with those lights.

might I ask why you want to do this swap in the first place tho?

gingerbreadman,
thanks for the reply. The resistor you speak of goes in parallel with the alt / bat light (560 ohm) and is used to excite the alternator incase the alt / bat light burns out correct?
I'm putting it on my 79 F100 302, and the reason is, I'm installing a Mass-flo EFI kit and I need to upgrade the charging system to handle it. My headlights dim at idle with the current alternator, so I know it would be a real problem when I throw the extra demand on it.

ok, i think your planning on wiring it a different way then i did, you need the resitor in the stator wire because the stator is not meant to run on a full 12 volts. i wired mine as a stand alone circuit, i dont remember exactly what i did but i eliminated the stock ammeter gauge (they never move anyways) if i had more time id dig up the diagramns and look at my setup but im off to work for a couple months and wont be around my pickup.
