Bonehead mistake.....

So here we go............
A friend of mine just did a TrickFlow Upper half kit. Heads, cam, intake, 1.6 rockers, 30lb injectors, underdrives, flaming river manual rack. Smog pump and hardware, A/c and hardware, egr and hardware have all been removed. Pretty much all the things that can be removed have been. He has been messing with this car for months.

Now, when he goes to start it, its a real hard start. The fuel smell is very strong. I went to help him yesterday and found a few things......

The timing was off, I set it 10 degrees and re stabbed the distributor...
I reset the valve lash on all cylinders....
Good spark....
Good fuel pressure.....

Tried to start again.....same $hit. Ok......went thru all all the vacuum lines,no problems there......

Then I notice something.........

When he pulled the hard heater lines on the passenger side manifold, he plugged the engine temperature sensor hole in the manifold and left the sensor unplugged.........

DOOOOHHH!!!! Could this have caused the problem he's having????? The car runs but only over 1500 rpm's or else it dies......Plugs are DEEP BROWN almost black and it smells like its running pig rich.............

Please, tell this is the problem so I can get the new sensor and be his hero......

Might have to turn the fuel pressure down a little bit. Those 30# are probably a little too big for his combo. I would try to drop the fuel pressure, clean the IAC, and re-set the base mechanical idle. start there.

That was very likely the problem. Plug it up and start it.

The 30lb injectors can create to much cranking fuel, depending on the level of calibration. I still have mine set at the stock setting at 39psi with vacuum line off and engine warm/running.

I was able to run my 19s with the TFS top end kit just fine. I went with 24s later because I got a good deal on them and figured later on down the line it would be useful. After the motor is warmed up does it still run like poorly?

make sure you have the H.O. firing order. the car will run on a non H.O. firing order. it will also run if you wire it clockwise too. (ask me how i know :rlaugh: ) but it will mkae for a very HARD start and runs like crap.

ECT sensor plays a large role in the A/F ratio. Especialy on cold starts, if it thinks the engine is cold it will enrich the ratio. Is it throwing the ETC out of range code?

Get that **** plumbed back in, then report back.
