would a 4 speed from an 84 or 86 mustang work for my 92 5.0. i can get everything for basically free and wanted to do a t5 swap, but for free i cant really go wrong with the 4 speed.

on another note, is 350 a good deal for a t5 out of a 95 gt? would that tranny work for the swap or do i have to keep it in the fox body years?

The 4 speed will work. They are not as strong but it will hold up for a little while with mods, or forever with a stock 5.0L. The T5 4cyl trans has a smaller diameter input shaft and causes vibrations at high speed and RPM in a 5.0L. I do not know if the 4speed stick trans has the smaller input shaft or the larger like the T5 V-8 trans.

The 94-95 T5 has a longer input shaft. Using the bell housing might work, but I don't know for sure on that one, never done it.

the smaller input shaft doesnt cause vibrations..u gotta change the pilot bearing accordingly..ive been to 250 kms\h in my stock vert with the 4cyl tranny..no vibrations here except that my ac\eliminator bracket cracked in half lol

Correct. Right bearing = no vibes

If the 4-speed is free, get it. $200-350 for a V-8 T-5 is typical. I would see if they'll let you pop the case and take a peek before you throw down cash though. They say, "Yeah, it ran great." when they're really thinking, "This guy's in for a hell of a surprise" when you put it in and the synchros are shot and the gear teeth are all chipped like crazy.

There is no "right" bearing. The 4cyl bearing will not fit in the 5.0L crankshaft opening. Not only is the diameter of the hole smaller, the entire bearing itself is smaller as well. It cannot be pressed in the 5.0L.

tthe o.d of the bearing for the 5.0 crank stays the same as if u put in a 4cyl tranny(obviously). the only thing thats changes is the i.dl. it should come from a 1992 ford ranger..i have the exact sicze measured with my vernier at work, ill post it up soo.. its and exact fit! and the 4 cyl treanny os m,ore fun to drive, the first gear has a lower ratio!!1!!!

To the original poster:

The Single Rail OverDrive (SROD) is a pile of crap and not worth your time. It will not hold up to a 5.0 in the long run and the ratios are not performance oriented. My advice is to wait a bit and save up for a proper 5-speed conversion.

+1

It sucks monkey balls. Don't even waste your time installing it and then later removing it. Do it right once and get a 90+ T-5 or rebuild your own t-5

whats wrong with the 4cyl tranny?

The 4-cyl trans has lower gears and equates to quicker acceleration, but the torque amplification of the gears generally causes the transmission to fail. You can run one, and many have run them for quite some time, but if you have quite a few mods, it will most likely grenade.

If it's a street car, and you can find one cheap, run a 4-cyl trans.

If it's a strip or street/strip car, I would get a V-8 trans.

ive been runing mine for a year, and running it hard. I blew my motor this spring. I hardley have any "performance mods" but i have a very strong clutch and decent tires. ive made a bunch of hard launches on the street and havnt had any problems..i blew my V8 T-5 last year with the same setup... but i misssed a couple of shifts..

I think itss more about the driver at my power level than it is the strenght of the tranny...

just my 2%

If I could get your input on this topic, i would appreciate it. I am contemplating a t5 swap for my rad 4 in my 77 Mach 1. I have a guy selling a t-5 that he is not sure what it is out of. The number he gave me 1352-238 translates to a 94-95 out of a 3.8. It has the longer input shaft which i need because of the Mustang II bell, and it is the same diameter and gear ratios as the t5 for the 5.0. My question is would it work? The only difference appears to be the torque ratings.
I appreciate your input.
