hey everyone, I am picking up my new cowl hood today... and I am curious about the installation of the hood pins (I am getting a pin on hood)

my question is: how big of a deal is it to install the hood pins? and I would presume (common sense) I'd need 4 pins :D

Not necessarily. Some hoods allow for hinges but not the stock latch. Others require four or more pins. I would suggest buying pins that require a unique key to unlock as little a-holes like to steal the pins.

cool thanks!!!!

(I agree about the drill once thing too)

now, my question would be, how the crap do I "judge" where to put the pins?????
that's my biggest concern!

Well I would find a nice area on your radiator support and put the pins symmetric(same distance) from both fenders inward. So say the nice spot is 16" from the drivers side, measure 16" from the passenger and drill your holes. Mount the pins and then bust out the playdough or paint.

Playdough method:
Approximate where your holes need to be on your hood and smash a wad of playdough on the inside of the hood. Carefully and as straight as possible, let the hood down into place. Hopefully, if all goes well, when you lift the hood back up, there will be a nice little hole where the tip of the pin smashed all the playdough away. Drill there.

Paint method:
Same idea, except you put a dab of paint on the end of the pin, preferably water based as it will come off easier. Set the hood down as described earlier. It should leave a nice round dot on your hood for you. Drill there.

REMEMBER, as the hood closes the last several inches, it is still making an arc, therefore your hole will have to be oversized or slotted slightly to accomidate.

Hope this helps.

I have yet to see a set of key-lock fasters that are actually hold down pins. Every key lock faster I've seen so far states specifically in the instructions that are not to be used for holding the hood down.

If someone out there HAS seen a set of actual key lock, hold down pins, post them up so this guy can get the right ones (I'd probably order a set myself too).

Just to be clear:

This type of pin is not adequate to hold down a hood without the use of some other kind of latch.

I would think that those locking pin fasteners would be better suited for use on the rear of a pin-on hood, where there's not likely to be as much lift (if any) upon the hood to try to rip it off - let the regular hood pins up front hold 'er down, and then have those for the rear two, to keep stupid people from stealing your hood or your motor goodies (or just being stupid vandals, in general).

Those come in locking, but they are made to hold down the hood on thier own. The lock mechanism isnt part of the hold down, it just stops anyone from releasing the lever.

I just installed these on my hood, and let me tell you, i have the utmost confidence these will be MORE than adequate to hold the hood down.
