The main thing is what is your goal. Either way gears!!! These cars love gears. No less than a 4.10's and 4.30's are great even for daily drivers. Longtube's will make some power throughout the powerband. Suspension mods will help as well if you dragrace it.

I want the car to continue very nice to drive around as my daily driver but when an SS wants to take them to the strip, I don't want to have any worries that I won't win by a few car lengths. I know gears would make a hella difference but I'm just not excited about getting into that IRS rear end and risking screwing something up in there. What about a tune for the car? How much does that help these cars?
I was a little tipsy last night sorry for not being specific on what I was wanting to do with the car hehe that does make a difference..

You're probably not going to see any monumental gains from just a tune. Headers may get you a few extra ponies, but the install is a PITA for the overall gains you'll see. If you really want to take on an SS and win by a car length or two you'll need to look at a power adder of some sort. Turbo, supercharger, N2O, etc.

Without gears, the potential of that car is being limited a lot! If you are looking to beat up on a few LS1's, I would do 4.10's, a 100 wet shot of nitrous(properly set up) and a good set of SFC's and IRS mods.

I would definately look into the NX kit with the Gen upgrade. Definately want those safety features. Also don't forget to go to NGK TR8 plugs gapped at .035 which are designed for a 4V on N2O. You can also safely run a 100 wet shot with stock tune and stock pump. It has been done many times by many people.

17 x 10.5 won't fit on your car unless you do some grinding. I would suggest 18 x 10's. I'd stay away from nitrous(IMO), If you need the power quickly I'd just go with a supercharger or turbo. I've got the Hellion turbo kit coming, should bump me somewhere around 475-500rwhp.

If I'm not mistaken a $10 set of IRS bolts were fix that problem without the need for grinding.

..and if that doesn't get you enough clearence run a set of these:

I would do the the whole suspension with gears (I did 4.10s). Get some different springs, add the rounded head bolts so you can fit the 315s, get the Steeda stop the hop kit, urethane bushings, another set of struts (I did the tokico D-specs). That's what my stage I consisted of. I did the whole suspension, then added some 17x10.5 rears with 315/35s. I have an 01 Cobra.
The car is a completely different animal, and took me a little while to relearn how to drive it.
Headers are nice, I have the kooks 1-7/8 stepped, but they were a pain in the butt to get in. I also added the magnaflow exhaust, accufab twin bore TB (twin 63mm I think), meziere electric water pump. The was all stage II stuff. From there I went nuts, but that should give you a good idea.

OH, and I had the car tuned via SCT software, and picked up 20whp and 18lb-ft peak.

what mph?

My take-

If you want to get a few lengts on a STOCK LS1....

4.30's
JLT CAI
Steeda UD's
LT's
OR H
MAC cat back
SCT tune

I made right at 300 with that on my 98...you have an 01 with better heads and intake, so you should be 310-315....

that will get you mid 12's with good driving.

I didn't start putting lengths on an LS1 until I installed my Vortec. Now I wipe the floor with them. I pulled HARD on one this summer. 70MPH roll til 90-100 and I was gone. Then we went from a light...0-about 60. I pulled before I even shifted to 2nd. I get them at the track by a good distance as well. I have never seen a really good LS1 car at the track yet except in 2004 this older dude had bolt ons and NOS, and he ran 12.20's. I got there first through every time due to a faster R/T. I didn't pop my hood once there and he had his open tweeking stuff between every run!!!!HAHAHAHA
