ok! please help someone! (and don't flame me for possibly dissing on a mustang)

I have a 93 GT right now, gonna sell it and buy either a 2001 Mustang GT (pictured below) or a 2000 TransAm (also pictured below)
the mustang is like $6,000 cheaper than the trans am, BUT.... this is my understanding

(1) there is ZERO chance of the mustang ever even thinking about keeping up with the trans am, even if the mustang has 4.10 gears, exhaust, a chip and intake.... the stock trans am would blow its doors off still, and in embarrassing fashion....

(2) the interior on the trans am is just waaaaaay nicer, the recaro style seats, etc.

now, I have had 4 different mustangs, a 2000 GT, a '97 GT, a 93GT and a 98 Cobra...

everyone tells me that the trans am (the LS1 engines) will just eat any mustang alive...

can someone shed some light on this for me, and tell me, if I buy the mustang and spend a ton of $$$ with mods, is a stock T/A still gonna smoke me?????

(here's pics of both cars!)

Well it all come down to

Mustang = Spend the extra cash youll save from not buying the trans am and build yourself a "ONE OFF" stang thats yours.

FBODY = Spend the extra money and have something every one else has

It all comes down to YOUR personal taste and how wild your mind can run with the extra cash !

hmmmm, now I had'nt thought of it that way...

but, around here, there's 1,000,000 mustangs, I have only seen two FBODYS in my town, like ever... very very rare cars.... I would think the mustang would be more common?

but anyway, aside from that.... the direct question is, that if I took say a 2001 gt, and put 4.10's, exhaust, chip, off road h-pipe, etc.... would I still lose to a T/A badly? (my understanding is yes)

Well if your just looking for the faster car then it's the Trans Am hands down. But with the parts you talk about will really wake that GT up and will hang pretty good with a stock LS1 T/A. Instead of a chip though I would go with a handheld tuner, most go with SCT or diablosport. Good luck with the decision.

with the same driver yes the T/A would win, but it would still be a good race. If the T/A costs so much more consider a 99/01 Cobra they react well to mods, Or you can buy the GT and put $3.2K S-trim in it and be a good deal faster than the T/A. In my opinion the GT sounds much better, looks better (especially modded) and the interior may not be as big name, but is situated better than the T/A's i think. I couldn't stand the interior of a camaro for more than a month. But w/ the T/A you do get a 6-speed and a pretty good engine N/A. There's a trade off.
And yes you do probably see a millions mustangs, but how many do you see that are actually looking nice and fast? Rarer than most.

The only way a 99-04 GT will beat an LS1 6 spd F body is with nitrous, blower, or turbo, & this would have to be against a stock-ish F body @ that....Its probably possible with heavily worked heads, cams, tune & every major bolt on out there, but this would end up probably costing more than getting a blower....

On the other hand, a Stang will beat an F body in the looks department all day if u ask me....The 93-01 Trans Am is one of the most hideous, ugly looking american musclecars ever built IMO, so to me it wouldnt matter how fast it was, u couldnt pay me to drive one.....Pop up headlights, & honeycomb tailights, YUcK!!!!!

Thats just my opinion though, get what u would rather drive........How bout getting an 03-04 Mach 1, U wont worry about those LS1's much anymore!!!!

i agree with this guy, go with a mach 1...that'll beat the LS1 with basic bolt-ons, i dunno if you even need them and dominate in looks hands down

beware of the goat

If your referring to the LS1 GTO, I beat my buddys @ the track twice & then once from a 2nd gear roll...The only time he beat me was from a 3rd gear roll, & this was by only 1/2 a fender & not until about 135 mph....Now the LS2 version, thats a different story....Those things are very heavy & have horrible IRS wheelhop. also looks pretty ugly like most pontiacs after 1973 IMO....They do ride & drive smooth though & the LS2 versions have alot of power....

that is the exact T/A... and it's a carfaxed, 1-owner car with only 60,000 miles, those wheels/tires dont even have 20 miles on them, the lot just put them on brand new.... so that car is appealing to me, cause what if you mod it.... then what.... I could only imagine it insane fast.... but I do like mustangs, and I've had 4 of them, but sitting in the seats, just makes the T/A so appealing, arrrggggggggg - I just need to decide if I can afford the extra $$$ I guess...
either one is going to be faster than my 93 that I am currently driving.

My 99 GT runs dead even with a buddies 99 Camaro SS with the 6spd and intake/catback for mods.

All ive got are some bolt ons (intake/UD pullies/chip/x-pipe/catback/3.73 gears)

I dont think you NEED a nitrous/blower/turbo to beat an LS1 with a 99-04 GT

You realize you could just make your 93GT insanely fast for pretty cheap. H/C/I and supporting mods for under $3000 to make 300-350rwhp...and in a 3000lb car (after some weight reduction) your talking bout an easy low 12sec car. Also, SC kits to make 300-350rwhp are under $3000.

x2 on keeping the 5.0. Going 5.0 to a 2v 4.6 is a step back in my opinion. A 3v or 4v 4.6 is a good choice however.

If you really want to make the move if you want PURE speed go with the TransAm...

If you want to be able to pop the hood and not dread working on your car, handle really well, look great (non WS-6 T/A's look plain to me), then go Stang.

Plus, 6k difference will build one mean GT (yes, even a 2v 4.6).

To me it already sounds like you have made your decision really..... If the Trans Am is what you want, then go ahead and get that. If you decide that the GT is the route you want to take, then a blower is all you need to beat bolt on LS1's. Get a few more supporting mods and you'll have a pretty quick car.

+1

and ask the owner of the T/A if you can change the spark plugs on it and then let me know if you still want it:rolleyes: ...or better yet try putting headers on that POS:D
