I Found A Coolant Leak HELP *PICS*

i just noticed coolant sitting on top of my intake manifold, its looks like its coming from the upper radiator hose, where it attaches to the manfiold. after taking off the alternator i found a puddle behind it. the intake was put on by the previous owner after the plastic one broke. im not sure if it was done properly. whats most likely leaking? and what is the next thing i should do? btw i have a ford service manual
thanks!

Looks alot like the t-stat housing is either cracked or has a bad gasket. Go to autozone and get a pressure tester and check the pressure in the system. You should see the leak right away especially in that spot.

if i took off the t-stat could i visually inspect it? and then re seat the gasket? seeing that i dont have a ride tonight to get to autozone.

Them housings are very fragile. They will break easily. After you take it off you will need a new gasket for sure. I would try the gasket first and see what happens if you cant see a crack in the housing. Very possible the thing will just split in half. Be super careful putting it back on. Good luck.

if all else fails a little black rtv will get you to autozone and back. Nice intake :) I have one on my 5.4. I haven't had problem 1 with the Hardball'r that I didn't induce.

thanks!
It world be better to replace the t-stat gasket they are like $5 or somethig like that and. That could be the problem maybe the previous owner used the old gasket.
first thing tomomorrow ill be going to get a new gasket.

ive been happy with it. one less thing to worry about when im rebuilding the engine, plus no cracking:nice:

IMO, the most important part of replacing the thermostat/gasket is the removal of the bolts. If one feels like it's REALLY tight, don't try to force it out. It will break, trust me, and man that's not fun to re-tap and all. FWIW...

so i just realized i had the stock intake manifold laying around. so a took a couple pictures showing the crack where it failed. the previous owner said something about repairing the crack. what the hell was he talking about?

plus, does the gasket fit down inside the lip under the t-stat?

...just thought id play with the camera

The T-stat has an o ring. I just replaced the one on the 01 GT motor I am putting in my 81 notch. The original o ring was crushed pretty flat from being original. The new one was nice and round and it felt like it seated very well. It looks like it is starting right there and resting on the block. There is a hose down there too that can leak...but I doubt that is it because it is evident along the t stat.

alright, thanks. i just picked a gasket up today.

i know how to fully drain the coolant, but, how do i drain it just enough to take the hose off?

alright nevermind about my last post.
i figured it out. one question though, i wasnt paying attention when i took out the t-stat so is it supposed to go like this?

Hard to tell just by the pics but looks like you need some new intake manifold gaskets. You should probably put a little bit of RTV silicone around the coolant ports. Maybe the manifold you have isn't machined perfectly flat in that area, causing the leaks?

Good luck

BTW did you notice any power with that manifold?

thats what ive been thinking from the start, i actually think the t-stat housing on the intake is too big. so its hard to center the gasket.
the hps definitly flows better, but i need to get her on a dyno still. it hasnt been tuned since before the intake was put on.

btw- how many gaskets are there? and what about the hose under the t-stat that can leak?
