I plan to do a lot of autocrossing this upcoming year and I wanted to see who else is a "cone killer." I have done it a few times now and I am absolutely hooked... so much so that I could care less about drag racing. If you do, what class are you in? Do you like your class? Are you at all competitive? What wheels/tires are you running?

I've autocrossed once, and from that experience I really want to do some more. I'm working on USAFA's FSAE race car, and the local autocross folks invited us out to an event. I got some rides and one guy let me co-drive his Miata for 4 runs. I never knew that going as fast as you could go around some cones could be so fun. I'm thinking about turning my '93 Cobra into something of an auto-crosser, but we'll see.

I've done it a couple times. I have no idea what class it was, just entered it and slapped on a helmet. I drove my buddy's eclipse which is set up for all that mumbo jumbo. I'm not competitive, but I've done it enough so that its not that embarrassing any more.

I do know that the class was a "street tire" class and that everyone was looking at tires and talking in solemn and important tones. My buddy rides on Falken Asanis (spelling?) I can't remember off the top of my head.

I've been racing my 350Z for two years now with a local sports car club (My Mustang is over powered and under braked). I usually finish within the top three in my class which is B-Stock. Officially my car is classed in C-Stock but the competition is just not there.

Racing at this level is a blast and really the only true expense is tires. There is very little in the way of risk as far as damage to your car if the course is set up properly.

Some AutoX clubs are great fun and others are very cliquish (sp?). Look for the right group of people and you will learn a lot. The fastest or most powerful car is not always the winner. This will separate the true drivers from the wannabes. You simply can not mask poor driving on these tight courses!

Good luck and stay with it! There is no substitute for good instruction.

I gave it a shot once at Englishtown's Waterfest this past summer. VW brought 7 brand new GTi's and Jetta's out and let anyone go around the track for free. I took the Jetta TDi out, and got the 4th best time of the day...keep in mind thats the slowest VW, only 150hp, and i was beating GTi's and Jetta's with over 50 more hp. It was a BLAST! Theres a southeastern chapter of the SCCA which holds events about 5 minutes from my school in Savannah, GA. Every time they hold an event, I've either been way too hungover to drive (9am events), or had too much work. They are going to have a few events in the springs, and im definately going to give it a shot!

I've done it a few times in the past, it is tons of fun. I even managed to pull off a win in the Novice class. It's a blast and teaches one exactly what your can will and will not do.

I also learned something very useful, that ABS only works if all 4 wheels don't lock at the same time. I found that out as I was skidding sideways across the police skid pad, in the rain. Somewhere there is a video of that, not the most graceful thing, but it was a learning experience. At least in my area, rain doesn't not usually cancel an event. The SCCA had lost the use of that site for a couple years but I just found out that they will be back there in '08. Since it's just minutes from my home, I'm going to try to run some events next season.

My car is legal for E-street prepared class. However, my skills are not at that level yet :nonono:

I did the scca learning curve and a few events but that was it for me. I meant to go more but never got my scca membership and had no one to go with. But yes in the street tire class you want the Falken Azenis RT 615, its known as the "cheater slick" and its what everyone runs to be competitive, unless something better has come out in the last year. I did get into Road courses tho...Thats what I do now and have a hoot with it. I will eventually do both tho cuz autocrossing is cheaper and still helps improve your skills.

Dont have any autocross photos but I do of me at Gingermann Raceway (I know some of you have seen these already including Paul but for the others) :D

THe awd cars were passing me on the straights that day, bald Azenis tires are terrible( but fun:D ) in the rain. I had the windows up and AC on most of the day and I still had too much power to put to the ground.:( After fishtailing a few times at 100+ mph with a pit wall to my right I decided to lay off and take it easy on the straights.

Oh and for those who know the track it looks goofy cuz we drove it backwards.
