95 Overheating problem, please help!

New poster here, please bare with me.

About two weeks ago, I was driving my 95 when I noticed the temperature gauge jumping around a little bit. This was a bit strange to me, because unless there is a problem the temp gauge reads solid as a rock between the N and O of normal. I didnt think too much about it, but then the next day it began to shudder a little bit and the next thing I know the temperature is jumping up past the L to right next to the red zone.

Get the car home, starting checking things out. There is a little bit of rust in the coolant, I figure the radiator is shot. There is a bit of steam leaking out of the connection between the top radiator hose and the radiator. I replace the radiator, flush the coolant, replace the hose and clamp, all that jazz. Same problem (not the leaking and rust, just the overheating).

My next guess is the thermostat, so I get in there and replace that. Same deal. Still overheats within 15 minutes of starting the car.

Now, my radiator fan is NOT coming on which I assume also is a problem (I tried turning the A/C on full blast [even though it is broken and hasnt worked in forever] because I heard that was supposed to turn that fan on automatically), but my problem is this: It seems to me like the car goes from running very cool to overheating very rapidly. That sounds more like a water pump, right? I just replaced the water pump about 6 months ago, so I dont know where to go from here.

I am at my wit's end. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, because with 6 months left 'till college graduation I was really hoping not to have to put $1000 into my car to keep it running until then. Changing the water pump is an absolute pain, but I'll do it again if I have to. It's just too cold to ride my motorcycle everyday, and I miss my stanger.

does it overheat in traffic (under 25mph) or cruise (over 25mph) or both??

do you have the coolant full in the radiator?? not the overflow but the radiator.

also, if the fan isn't coming on that's a prob. how are the fuses??
 
you might wanna check the fan clutch if the fuses are good mine would over heat and it was cuz the fan clutch wasnt working jus some thing to like at for the fan..... as for the overheating is there any coolant in the oil ??
 
This sounds like a textbook case of a blown head gasket.

When the head gasket is leaking, sometimes the combustion gasses leak into the coolant, spiking the temperature and causing the discoloration you are seeing. Your year of Mustang is notorious for blowing head gaskets.
 
when you replaced all this stuff, did you burp the coolant system? i replaced the motor in my 3.8L cougar and didnt do this, and it did exactly what youre saying (minus the fan not working).

to burp, or bleed, the coolant system of any trapped air, you must open the valve on top of the engine on the lower intake manifold, located just behind the thermostat housing and let any air release itself.

i hope this is a bigger part of your problem, and NOT those damn head gaskets...


and doesnt this car have an electric fan? so no clutches to worry about......

Hey, when life hands you a lemon- make lemonade! This is the perfect opportunity to replace your heads with ported heads from Super Six Motorsports You need to replace the gaskets with better ones anyway- why not use this chance to pick up 70 horsepower?

That's what I would do.
 
this is the same thing my car did just 2 days ago...... but heres the kick in the a$$.. I JUST had my a new head gasket put in and had my heads reconditioned and shaved down at teh end of september...... I drove it 2 weeks and my front driver coil spring broke...... it took me about 3 weeks to have that fixed and i drove it maybe 2 weeks tops and my car did this exact thing...

Hey it sounds like you are driving my car!! We found that the fuse for the fan kept blowing. Also when the engine overheats it burns up the heat sensors just in front of the intake. If you get everything fixed let me know because mine still overheats when i'm driving on a warm day.
 
Please let me know...My 94 convertible V6 is doin the same thing.replaced faulty temp sensor, thermostat,waterpump, and when I installed the thermostat I drilled a hole in the flat part to avoid having to burp the cooling system and the piece of crap still has the temp guage go up super high when Im on the highway doing 70+ mph but cruisin around town no problem.This is my 3rd mustang (1st V6) and I am thinking about donating it to the local volunteer fire co. so they can set it on fire and train rookies with it. P.O.S.
 
Really a band-aid solution for a amputation kind of problem, but I had alot of luck with red line water wetter in a older chrysler with a 360. They claim that it'll drop the temp by 30F, mine was more along the lines of 20F realistically, but 20F cooler for less then 10bucks is a pretty good bargain.
 
It's another blown head gasket.....sigh. That's the second one I've had with this car. Doubt it's worth fixing anymore.

I warped both heads on mine, when they got replaced I used 1996 heads and had them fitted for the 95 valves and seats. its common knowlege that the 95 heads are the crappiest heads that were made. If you decide to replace them go like I did with the 96 and have the work done you will be happier.
 
is there a simple fix to the head gasket problem? someway to keep them from leaking withoiut changing them? i dont have the time money or help to change the gasket AGAIN. and if it isnt my head gasket what else could it be?

I scored a free '95 Winstar with 3.8L in great condition except for one minor problem...occasionally it would leak coolant into the front passenger side cylinder and I'd have to pull a spark plug and turn the engine over to release it.

This is going to sound real lame, but a half tube of "Bars Leak" into the radiator "fixed" the problem. At least well enough that it hasn't happened again in almost 20K miles (crosses fingers...). It still has other problems that cause the MIL to flash on cold mornings, but at least he engine has never hydro locked again! :D

Of course Your Mileage May Vary...
