Our cars require 6 quarts including the filter....thats what my manual says anyways.

My car has always used some oil...actually around 1/2 quart to 1 quart every 3K. Thats the norm with these engines....if your not burning oil then your in the minority by a long shot. Either that or you drive like a grandmaw. If your going WOT and running high RPMs, you should loose around 1/2 quart at least every 3K.

After the cams and when I would be shifting @ 6200RPMs or so, my oil consumption would go up alot. take it easy and it wouldnt really burn anything.

this is the first time i have ever head of 4.6s using oil at all. I thought that the mod motors didnt have any consumption problems because my gt doesnt use any oil and i check the oil before i change it. but 1/2 quart is normal? have you had a compression and leakdown test? because to me that doesnt sound right. And yes i drive my car hard regularly running it to 5 grand +.

All of you guys have my head spinning!
I have a 2001 GT that I bought new. After 10,000 miles, I added a Vortech V2.
My manual calls for 5 quarts. I've been giving it only 5 quarts even since the V2. I use only Mobile 1 Synthetic like the warranty on the V2 suggested. And, now, after 40,000 miles, I've had no issues.
I think that the N/A guys that are giving 6 quarts are hurting themselves.
I am living proof. Go with 5 quarts of synthetic. You can't go wrong with that.

half way through 2001 ford switched a lot of things over. I know my car take just over 6 quarts. If i put in 5 quarts and run it, it will show the oil low light. Your car might be diff, i dont really care either way:p

I know that you are correct. They did switch a lot of things over in 2001.
I'm just saying that I've run the Mobile 1 oil on 5 quarts plus an external supercharger. All on the same engine the 2002- 2004 have.

I had a 71 Camaro years ago and I changed the oil and had the gasket from the old filter stuck on there. So I went for a little drive after and notice the oil pressure suddenly dropped. So I pulled into a parking lot and all of the sudden started sliding around on it because the oil was dumping out underneath.

the filter blowing off has nothing to do with how much oil he has or does not have, nobody answered his post. if the filter literally blew off then it was the wrong filter(thread size). if it blew all the oil out but filter was still there, when old filter was removed the gasket was still stuck to base

Truth is, you don't know what happened unless you were there. I have heard of some really weird things happening before. So, you can't just say you know what happened. Dude, just go by the Ford link on capacity or what you owners manual says. I have always used K&N oil filters, but the motorcraft ones are just fine. Freak things happen, and nobody knows what happened unless they were there to witness it. Good luck man and let us know if the same thing happens to the new filter.

hahaha, it doesnt take much to get us mustang owners all confused huh?

3 pages later and a lot of posts, we're all arguing about completely different things unrelated to the original post.. i love it.
