Is the Mustang getting the new 3.5 ?

The new V6 is an aluminum block design with a forged crank and rods (leaving just the pistons for an upgrade).

Also, it makes around 270hp in certain applications already.

So, with the Camaro coming out with probably 400 hp in the SS or Z and probably much more than 250hp in the V6 model, will ford drop the iron block 4.0 in favor of the 3.5L for a drop in weight, increase in power and efficiency? Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I'd personally like to see the V6 with Direct injection tuned to about 280hp and hopefull the GT will get more than 350hp, Shelby gt getting 380, GT500 getting 500 still and maybe an aluminum block. Is the Boss still on? 390 hp 5.0L sounds good to me.

With a swap to forged pistons and putting on some boost, that 270hp can jump to 350 easily in a stock configuration (new SVO?) and crank the boost to get more than 400. Plus, an aftermarket lightweight K-member and control arms, lightweight body panels, lose the sound deadening, etc..... sounds like a nice plan.

I remember hearing rumors before but it has kind of trailed off. News of the Camaro coming with 400 hp surely will get Ford to up the power in the GT, but will they offer close to 400 in the GT and still keep the 4.0 with 200 in the 6? Does not make sense to me. Especially when the new GM 3.6L VVT V6 puts out 306hp in the Cadillac STS and CTS AND gets better mileage than the non DI 3.6L, with the efficiency it gets it could easily let them tune the 8 for a little more and as a whole the camaro will still get great mileage due to the 6.

Your thoughts?

Concentration on high horse power and ignoring V6 buyers is what killed the Camaro years ago. High horse power isn't what the masses want. Time has proven that. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree to a point. The last gen Camaro was an extremely unusable vehicle. My ex GF had one and I hated driving it because of the seat position/ view. That combined with a 1/3rd scale rear seat made the car impractical.

The new high feature 3.6L VVT in GM's portfolio will get about 30 mpg in the new STS sedan. In a lighter Camaro coupe, it should get a few more. Add in good gearing and it could be much more. The same can be said of the 3.5L from ford. I'd much rather see better efficiency/ lighter weight at the cost of extra horsepower..... :D Basically it's a win/win. Better fuel efficiency, lighter weight AND more power...... please don't argue with me or I'll think you are a republican.

i heard talk of the mustang getting the 3.5 v6. i hope it does, but like stated. if it does they have to bump the gt hp up. since it would be way to close. i think they are gonna put it in the fusion as well.

also they are working on a turbo v6. hopefully that makes it into a mustang. maybe a v6 svt. that would be sweet.

its in the new edge and 500 errr taurus with 265 and 263 respectively.

Even if they put it in the stang with 263 or 265hp, bumping the GT to 340 would leave enough of a difference, and still be far enough under the BOSS that is rumored to have 390.

rumor is neither the new Camaro nor the new Challenger will get a 6.

The 3.6 GM (actually a Suzuki engine) is a sweet, sweet motor (as GM's go). But it is a high end engine for the sigma platform which the Camaro isn't.

The new 3.6 is not a suzuki engine, it is produced by Suzuki for it's XL-7 under license from GM. The engine was designed by opel (GM's euro brand) They do not develop engines specifically for a certain platform, it is either FWD or RWD. The High Feature 3.6 is for FWD right now but a new external block design would make it right at home between the fenders of the Camaro. GM has already hinted that the Camaro will get the 3.6L V6 anyway, upping it to the High feature version is the only question now.

It is a high feature engine (actually part of the name) that can easily be included in the Camaro with minimal reworking. I don't know where you heard rumors that the Camaro won't come with a 6, but I have talked to more than one person who worked directly on the Camaro development program and both said without a V6 version, there is no Camaro. Rumor WAS that the Challenger would not come with a 6, but Chrysler recently announced it is looking at a V6 version in the 26k range.

FYI the Caddy with the 3.6L (Again, which GM has already hinted that the Camaro will get) is $2000 less than the one with the 306hp 3.6L. That engine upgrade also comes with other high feature items such as;
- standard leather seating with heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats
- an "Ultraview" sunroof that covers 70% of the roof
- upgraded instrument cluster with multi-line Driver Information Sensor
- 17" wheels
- polished aluminum exhaust tips
-stabilitrak
-Bose 8 speaker sound system
- tire pressure monitoring
And the entire package costs about $2k.

So that engine alone is not all that much more expensive than the normal 3.6 they are already looking to put in the Camaro.

must be why I called it a rumor,,,??? Read it in one of the Hot rod rags.

Produced by Suzuki, but not a Suzuki engine ? I have an XL-7, must be where I got the assumption it was a Suzuki engine.

Yep, rumors have been flying like crazy since before day one on all three cars mentioned. As usual, if it is an old rumor or very early in the development of a vehicle, it might not hold any weight. Just last night after posting I read another rumor, DC (before the divorce) stated they would consider a 3.5L powered version of the Challenger if demand was there. Makes sense sine they are talking high 30's for the SRT8 powered one. Now that has changed to "will be offering a V6" which wil be in the mid to high 20's.

The engine is also produced in AU and in Europe but it was developed by Opel. Suzuki simply shares the engine, and makes it themselves using GM tooling.

The Saab SUV uses the LS based 5.3L V8, and says saab on it, still a GM engine.

high 30's ? I wish, I'd own 10 SRT8 Challengers in the high 30's.

My guess is the SRT8 Challenger will be very much like the GT 500 at $25-$50 grand over window.

The 3.5 liter 6 in the Challenger would be a great combo. Personally I'd love that car. That 3.5 is a nice motor and with the 6 speed slap shift (or whatever hokey name they'll call it) would be a sweet combo.

As for the Saab (had a Saab once, I know where they got the name, SOB) it is very obviously a gussied up Trailblazer, ie: UGLY. The new model XL-7 isn't on the same platform is it ?
