Runnin' my VIN and Doortag Codes, it all seems to line up with what I see, but how do you tell if it's an authentic Cobra II or just a clone; since 'Cobra II' was just an exterior styling option and not an entirely different car?

Thanks

I actually saw the answer to your question in another thread last night but I looked at so many threads I can't remember which one it was. I know it said that it was identified on the tag that's near the radiator and a letter C is involved.

The only way to know for sure (from anything on the car), is from the buck tag. If it says "CB" on it, then it's a real Cobra.

Keep in mind, that the Cobra package was just cosmetic. There is no specific body code, and no parts for the Cobra II that couldn't be swapped from another car. You could even get a Cobra with a 4 cylinder.

This is all true for a '78 Cobra, however if the car were a '76 or '77, they used a different interior code. My '77 has the black standard interior, but because the '76 and '77 Cobra II used deluxe door panels even with the standard interior, they have a different code. I discovered that my car was a true Cobra that way, before I learned about the buck tag. I think it's really unfortunate that Ford decided to save a few bucks by reverting to standard interiors in '78. I like the '77 door panels the best of them all. My $.02

I don't believe that's true. I have never seen any data sheets showing Cobra specific interior codes. Interior codes usually refer to the color and seat type, nothing else. If you have deluxe seats and other parts went along with that package, then that's how it was, but there is no code to specify that. Plenty of non-Cobras came with standard seats with the insert door panels.

Also, on the 77.5-78s, there ARE deluxe door panels. Most Cobras came with them. They are not as flashy as the 74-mid77 panels, but they are different from the standard door panels from the beginning that were still used for 78.

so other than the bucktag, there's no way to tell? (cuz my bucktag is either gone or invisible)

From anything coded on the car, no. Unless you can find the built sheet under the rug or seats.

You could order a Marti Report, or a 999 report from Ford.

If you can post some good pics of your car, including the interior, we can at least see if it's got the right stuff to be a CobraII. I can tell you right now, if your avatar pic is your car, the stripes are not correct.

Well, I guess you don't have the wealth of documentation I've been collecting on the II for 21 years now! Here's the breakdown:
1977 Mustang II Interior Trim Codes

AA Standard Black Vinyl Bucket
BA Luxury Black Vinyl Bucket
GA Cobra II Standard Black Vinyl Bucket
HA Cobra II Luxury Black Vinyl Bucket

AD Standard Red Vinyl Bucket
BD Luxury Red Vinyl Bucket
GD Cobra II Standard Red Vinyl Bucket
HD Cobra II Luxury Red Vinyl Bucket
ED Luxury Red Plaid Cloth Bucket
KD Cobra II Luxury Red Plaid Cloth Bucket
RD Appearance Decor Group Luxury Red Plaid Cloth Bucket

AN Standard White Vinyl Bucket w/Red Trim
BN Luxury White Vinyl Bucket w/Red Trim
GN Cobra II Standard White Vinyl Bucket w/Red Trim
HN Cobra II Luxury White Vinyl Bucket w/Red Trim

AW Standard White Vinyl Bucket w/Black Trim
BW Luxury White Vinyl Bucket w/Black Trim
GW Cobra II Standard White Vinyl Bucket w/Black Trim
HW Cobra II Luxury White Vinyl Bucket w/Black Trim

I have the codes for all other combinations of interior trim colors, but these are all of the ones that were available on a Cobra II, along with the non-Cobra options.
There doesn't appear to be a different code for '76, apparently because they were conversions done at Motortown, so only '77 has a separate Cobra II interior code.

The difference in door panels is that for '76 and '77, Cobra II had the longer style armrest even if the standard interior was ordered (so essentially a Luxury Interior door panel in a standard interior). In '77, all hatchbacks with the Luxury Interior Group had the brushed aluminum insert, with the running pony in the center. Some Cobras, mid-year, got the running pony instead of the Cobra II emblem, no idea why. Despite this, the Cobra II with the LIG had a separate code.

For '77.5 and '78, the Cobra II had the same door panels as everything else, the standard with short armrest or the deluxe with the long one, so they have the same codes as any other MII.

I hope this helps!

Very interesting! I have seen all those codes before, but have never seen them with the word Cobra listed.

Where exactly did you get that info? None of my Ford paperwork, nor the mircofiche, nor the paper books I have show that.

I've got it in some showroom paperwork around here somewhere, but the best reference is the Catalog of Mustang ID Numbers 1964 1/2 - 93, by Cars & Parts Magazine. I still see copies of it around, so you should be able to pick one up. It doesn't have much in the way of pictures or fluff, but has loads of info to decode any tag on the car, from VIN, door tag, motor/tranny/rear end tags, and then it has "samples" of interior and paint colors and fabrics. They appear to be photos of the actual showroom samples.

since we're on interiors, has anyone seen an "HB" trim code? my door tag has "HB" but I can't seem to find that code. it's a '76.

Are you sure it's an H? The second B indicates blue, but here are the available blue codes for '76:

AB - Standard Blue Vinyl Bucket *
BB - Luxury Blue Super-Soft Vinyl Bucket *
CB - Luxury Blue Velour and Vinyl Bucket
DB - Standard Blue Cloth and Vinyl Bucket *
EB - Luxury Blue Plaid Cloth and Vinyl Bucket *

* indicates this color would be available on a Cobra II

So, could it be one of those codes and it just didn't register on the tag well?
