I have had 2 GT 350 Shelby's and wouldn't trade my S-351 for one!!! Sure I would like to have my old 67 Shelby back but I still will keep my Saleen! The S-351 Saleen will out perform any of the old Shelby's! Plus you have air cond. and a lot better stereo! The thing you guys don't consider is our cars are more rare then the Shelby's! They didn't make many S-351 R-Code cars!! Don't pick on the guy for trying to get as much money as he can!! ( If he succeeds it makes are cars more valuable!) A friend of mine has a 66 GT 350 H car and I drove it a few months ago!! It is a slug!! Cool for its day but no match for the Saleens!! I personally think that the Fox body Saleen's are way under priced too!!! I will run any stock big block or small block Shelby Mustang and blow its doors off!!! Old Shelby owners, don't get mad at me! I will own an old GT 350 again some day! They are neat cars!!! But I really think our cars are very under-rated!!! Mark

The car is sweet , but it isn't a $110k ride. Just think about how many mint Saleens you could buy with that money. How long would it take to make money on that one car versus SSCs', SCs',or even SA10s. Forget about driving it either. Value would drop as fast as the mileage would grow. More power to the guy and it would help the value of ours if he succeeded, I just doubt anyone is that stupid. How much did that other S351 with 188 miles hit the last time it was on Ebay?

As they say on Speed's coverage of Barrett-Jackson, "they're only original once."

As for the $110K asking price, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

Is it worth raking someone over the coals about? I guess to some people evidently it is.

I say all the power to the guy!

5 Years ago I would have never thought that anyone would give as much as they are for an old Shelby!!!! Also who would have thought that someone would give $ 25,000.00 over sticker for a new one!!! Once the public realizes what are cars are we will right in the same boat!! Mark

I agree!:D When I bought my first S351 in Sept 2000 I had always wanted a 67 Shelby but decided I didn't want a car that handled and drove the way it did. Of course I still want a 67 but with the prices today I probably won't get one. At least I still have my 67 Fastback from high school!!

Who would have thought they would have shot up 400%? I had never heard of Barrett Jackson back then either. I remember going in 1984 to the Shelby convention in Anahiem, Ca. 67 Gt500's were going for $7500!! They had a 427 Cobra and the guy wanted $100k. 427 Cobra's were going for much less and NO one could believe it, they all thought he was crazy!! It was a factory race car that had lots of history.......imagine what that would be worth now!!

With around 330 S351's total production from 1994-1999(2000) I think that It's a matter of time. They modified these more than any other Saleen which I think will show in the future:nice:

Mark, not mad. I too have a S351.......but I also have an old school GT350 with a modern stroker that is.........well........as a friend has nicknamed it ..it is a freak of nature. Well built stroker engines still have significant punch ( over 570 Crank HP) and for an old guy like me...are more driveable than a boosted engine. Linear HP build is ..just more desireable. Yep, the A/C and 13 inch brakes are nice.......OK, the S351 is an all around better car.....but I was lost in thought as I took the dog for a walk tonight...walked by the 66 GT350. I came to the conclusion...it is just an era thing, It is my era...actually a little early for me..but I started reading magazines about Shelby's in 67 or close to that, when I lived over seas.

I await the day when I will own a pristine s351 speedster again...maybe a 99 coupe!! Until then, the 1995 will have to do!

Please do not compare a classic Shelby car to this. From a performance standpoint, most modern cars would kick their butts, but you are not buying a classic car like a Shelby for that reason.

Heck, I can throw an S-trim on a 4.6-3V and give the S351 a run for it's money.

So you think If you put a S trim Vortech on a new 281 3v it will BLOW the doors off a R code S351???

You have a car that weighs 300-400lbs or ? more and a less cubes and less torque. Why do you think all the manufactures including Saleen put on positive displacement superchargers on the 4.6 cars?? To make up for less torque and a heavy car...... The NON supercharged S351 had 371hp 422ftlbs torque in a lighter car....so how is putting a S trim on the 4.6 3v in a heavier car going to BLOW the doors off a R code S351???

At least the new Shelby Gt500 has the 5.4l but look at what that car weighs almost 4000lbs! Thats over 600lbs more than my S351. :stirpot:

Edit, I had the torque wrong for the NON s/c S351....371hp@5100rpm 422ft lbs@3500rpm in 94-95, 1996 up had T/W heads and were rated at 400hp@5100& 432ft lbs@3500.

Got any stats on the R-Code? All I seem to be able to come up with is mid/high-12's at a little over 120mph. If so, I've seen plenty of Vortech blown S197 running high even mid-11's with S-Trims and minor suporting mods. Doesn't seem close to me?

An r code with the right height slicks, or a gear change, on slicks will run low 11's and even in the 10's.
Back in the day MM&FF ran a vert with slicks with a height compensating for lack of gear and it went 11.30.
Which in a hardtop would be 10's.

Keep in mind the times you see are listed for the s351 are standard radial times, s197 cars are undoubtably on drag radials or slicks.

120mph+ is fast as hell off the showroom floor.
Saleen supercharged s197s barely make it to 115mph in the quarter.
On equal tires, the s351 would spank it without breaking a sweat.

Very very few cars run 11's off the showroom floor on regular tires, that's why you have to look at the mph to see what is really faster.
New z06 runs high 11's, equivalent to the s197's you quote, but it's at 126mph on std radials, guys have gotten them low 10's on slicks and drag radials.

I seem to recall that on a non supercharged 371hp 422lf lbs S351, MM&FF got it into the 11's with slicks but the slicks were really tall and killed the gear ratio they only had 3.27's in it so it turned it into 3.0's in the back. They said that if they kept the stock tire diameter they would be in the mid 11's.....this is without the supercharger!! MM&FF got good times because they know how to run a car down the 1/4mi. Car& driver, Road & track they just spin the tires so the times are not great. There weren't alot of cars made so they didn't have tests in every other issue like the new cars.

What I was getting at was the new cars weigh alot more and start with less power ( what are the 3v rated at anyway 300hp & 315ft lbs @4500rpm ...way up high no torque down low) than the standard S351 so buy throwing a S trim supercharger on both I don't see how you think the new cars will "Blow" away a R code S351. You say you see plenty S197's running good times...why don't you see plenty of S351's doing the same thing?? Because there are only 300+ made and they are not out there getting thrashed at the strip........THAT is the point of this whole thread!! Talking about how they may go up in value.

I just had to get in here when you throw this out like hey its no big deal they are slow and the new cars are sooo fast even though they weigh alot more and have smaller motors and less torque It's not even close they will just Blow the S351 away.

Oh yeah, most S351's came with 3.27's in the back....some with 3.55's what gear are these S197's running?? 4.11's?? or more? Gears would make a huge difference also.

Hey Scott.....You just dynoed your stock 99 S351 and got good numbers....what were they again??

Edit: Edit, I had the torque wrong for the NON s/c S351....371hp@5100rpm 422ft lbs@3500rpm in 94-95, 1996 up had T/W heads and were rated at 400hp@5100& 432ft lbs@3500.

Gearbanger you are wrong!!! We also have a new black supercharged S-281 and it can't keep up with the S-351!!! The S-281 is fast but seems more refined than the S-351! S351Saleen77 I have the magazines you are right!! The first test is of a Red Non Supercharged S-351 and the next month they ran a test on a Wht. Supercharged S-351! They almost had it in the 10's!! It was in a 1996 Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine ! Mark

I bought my GT350 because it was a turn key road race car, that was still (almost) street legal.

I do not race the car any longer, and have made it more street friendly, but unless you have driven a purpose built race car albiet "old" car, it would surprise you. I have years if time slips, with documentation for every event. The best time on street tires ..at least that I can find is 11.7. I take great joy in driving the car in a safe but spirited manner. Yes, my S351 would win...in almost every setting...especially braking into corners........but when we jump on the cars door to door, the old car leaps in front...for at least a full gear change...and the longer ratio's in the GT350 is a distinct advantage when running the car hard ..in a straight line. The old car is lighter and almost as powerful. 490 RWHP vs. 505 but the s351 puts the power down much better...in between shifts.

Sorry, in my view, I have merit to compare the two cars. :D
