Hey guys.. right now i have a 351w block and 185AFRs in the garage. Im stroking the 351w to 408w. AND yes i know im chokin my engine!! ahh!! Im purchasing a kit from adpperformance.com. I am real confused on what rockers, cam, and intake combo i should put in it..??? i was told that i should put Comp cams 292.. but im not positive. Im shooting for 400hp to the wheels if possible.. I am looking for a combo that will also work if i swap the heads to 205s later in the future..

Also what Tranny would you guys recommend? auto?

Would you guys recommend 2 1/2 or 3 pipes??

If it helps im also getting a 9" with 3.73s..

thanks again for your guys professional help!!!

I have the 408W/AFR185 setup and it makes 530HP/515TQ... driving it can be like ice skating if I put my foot in it too hard too early. Car runs 117MPH in the 1/4. Don't buy the choking your engine line. The 185s are much bigger than any ported stock head back in the day.
Not saying 205s are bad by any means, but they move the power up. If you're interested, I'll dig up a link of my setup and dyno numbers.

I agree, the 185's do not choke a 408. I'd recommend 2 1/2 pipes for the exhaust and a toploader 4 speed or a tremec 5 speed, but it you like autos, then go with a built C-4

Yep, I agree with everyone here. 185's not bad at all. Trans is depending if you want to shift or not. I have been through a few sets of rockers and by far the best bang for the buck and toughest I have used are the pro comp magnums. Vic jr or perf rpm air gap would be the best but you might run into hood clearance issues. I am running a vic jr right now and love it but I also had a regular per. rpm on my stroker before and it ran great! With the small headers and that intake, my mach one went 11.39@119. Cam, I would definately go custom. Talk with either Ed at FTI or Jay allen. This is where you want to spend a little extra money, although they are really not that much more anyway.

185s wont "choke" it but they'll hold you back on the top end for total HP. Of course they'll provide more low end power and better torque across most of the band. I think that is desirable compromise for a street car that is not intended to be a complete handful under normal driving conditions.

Getting your goal of 400hp out of a 408W will be cake, even with 165s and a RV grind. You'll have a very reliable package that can still be cruised and taken through the drive-through without fear. I'm expecting more than 400fwhp out of my 357W with RPM top-half, using a 280/290 (228/236) .506 cam. With your increased displacement and longer stroke you'll have a torque monster on your hands with a 270-range cam. You did not mention brakes but you'll want to be sure you make enough vacuum for power assist too, so spec your cam accordingly.

I put an AOD (TCI Streetfighter) behind mine, rated for 450hp. That allows faster rear gearing (AOD has better 1st gear than C4 too) for acceleration AND the ability to do 70mph sustained without going deaf or putting undue wear and tear on the engine. If my car had been a manual car I'd have put a Tremec in it, but I didn't want the extra work, and a properly shifted auto will out drag a manual anyway.

Thanks guys. yeah i was under the impression that the 185s would choke the engine but i guess not.. i guess i was told wrong. i heard that i would have to spend money on some rockers that are retro so it can be hydraulic? is that true.. please school me on this!!!

so someone said 2 1/2s another one said 3".. what do you guys think?

so say comp cams? lift?

as for headers.. any input? 1 3/4s? what kind? i think i might be looking for shorties jus because my car is lowered

And what do you guys think about this kit? http://www.adperformance.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=277_279&products_id=215

I just bought almost the same setup. I have the Scat street/strip kit with h beam rods, 10.5:1 forged probe pistons and AFR 185s. My question is what cam would be good to run with this.

My block is a 74 casting 9.503 deck. I want to buy the hydro roller conversion lifters but am not sure if a solid roller would be better, what is the difference? AFRs site says if you use hydralic roller to upgrade the springs.

Also is it ok to use the a high volume oil pump?

Sorry about all the questions this is my first engine. The topics are so similar I didn't want to make a separate post.

i would use 1.6 rockers. the reason being that the 1.7 rockers tend to over stress the valve springs, and unless you take into the extra valve lift into account, you can run into coil bind problems. on a basically stock engine the 1.7 rockers can gain you a decent amount of power for cheap money, but as the power level, and rpm range rises, you dont gain enough power to make the change worth while in my opinion. it would be better to select a cam that fits the engine and use the 1.6 rockers.
