dome light to map light conversion

I have a 1990 hatch with a sunroof and I am trying to figure out a way to put the dome/map light combo out of a 93 in where the current insufficient dome light is now. Anyone who has done this or could give me a tip would help me out a lot. I have no idea how I should attach it. There is plenty of room for it.....

I tried to do this in my old '89. There are two problems. First, the opening in the headliner is HUGE compared to what you need for the map light. Secondly, the body of the maplight extends up into the roof. The curvature of the roof where the maplight usually goes is what allows it to fit. There is a metal clip on the base of the light. that has to clip to something on the body to ground it out so it'll work.

Its a real pain. But if you can modify the housing so it'll fit and do something about the extra space in the headliner, it could work.

I gave up

I know that this is not what you are looking for, but I had a similar problem in my 92 GT as it had an after market sunroof installed in it that was leaking so I had to replace it with a larger roof, and both of them where larger than the stock unit.

The original installer had moved the roof support back behind the sunroof and mounted the dome/map light there which resulted in a terrible looking installation.

When I redid the installation, I completely removed the roof mounted light unit and installed a convertable rearview mirror with the lights built into it, then I installed two footwell lights out of a 66 mustang on the drivers and the passengers side and hooked them all up to a theater dimmer like the new cars have, plenty of light compared to the old installation.

Just FYI
