Changing out Starter, any tips?

diconnect battery, be patient with the #$^$* Top bolt.

Install a mini stater from a 93 mustang this helps alot.

It's not too bad. The 3 bolt starters on 4.6L and 5.4L suck. The 5.0L isn't as bad. Just be patient, and keep everything square when you are wrenching. That way you have less chances of snapping bolts.

I would put a dab of lock tight on the bolts. I had trouble with them backing out in my old 91 GT 5.0L for some reason.

It's actually not as hard as you think. To make it simple to get to the top bolt, just take off your front passenger wheel, get a couple feet of extensions, and a swivel socket, it becomes cake.

Haha I made it easier than that on my 347 strokers starter.

I drilled the threads out of the bell housing and tapped the bolt hole on the starter and put the top bolt in from the back side. :D Made it easy to change then.

Long tube headers like to heat soak the starter. So I changed a few.

i just removed mine the other weekend. biggest tip i have for you is to put the car on 4 jackstands (or back wheels on ramps and front on jackstands, with the wheels sagging down, unloaded) and for the top bolt, go through the hole in the suspension. youll see what im talking about once you get in there. couple feet of extension and a swivel socket adaptor makes the top bolt easy.

also, the two bolts are different sizes. at least they were on mine.

i removed it in 20 minutes, and that included the time it too to figure it out. once i had it figured out, it took me about 5 minutes to put it back in.

oh yes, longtubes are fun, i have to unbolt the header and move it back and forth, to get my monkey palm to the bolts haha
