Trans v. Tranny

I agree with this post 100%. Also, we do not have a transaxle! I had a guy at work ask me if my transaxle was a manual or not. I said neither :)

One pet peeve of mine is, motors start engines! I always believed that a motor should only refer to something that is run with electricity, and engine for internal combustion. Oh, and your SRT4 is a Neon.

the actual definitions are:

-a motor is externally powered

-an engine powers itself

that big thing under your hood is an ENGINE!

Tranny was a hot rod term before people talked about transvestites in public and before most people on this board were even born. So was Mouse "Motor". Nearly everybody that has posted so far has an inaccurate slang term in their signature.
blower
built rear
vert

It is part of the hot rod herritage, don't knock it unless you just really want to make sure that everyone knows the tranny in your car is not the kind with gears. :nice:

how are those innacurate? those are slang terms, which is different than a motor/engine. although i agree that tranny/trans is really the same thing since transmissions are more common than transvestites (sp?).

Motor is slang as well.

Here are a few more These terms go back to the begining of hot rodding.

hm, cool site. im gonna read more when i have time. im just saying, that although 'motor' may be slang, but it shouldnt be. a motor is something else. it is its own unique part. i can see how 'vert' is slang, no biggie there. its just a pet peeve when people say 'motor' to describe an engine.

If it bothers you that much you should definitely write ford motor company and tell them to change their name.:nice:

sorry, I don't buy "tranny" being a traditional hot rod term...least it wasn't in the 60's when I started being interested in cars ;)

always been a "trans" or "transmission" (or "top loader" or "rock crusher" even), but never a tranny

oh BTW...an engine can be a motor, but a motor doesn't have to be an engine

and while I'm on the subject...those things inside your tires are "WHEELS", not rims...rims are what you shoot a basketball at (well a part of the wheel assembly if you want to get technical)

and just to be clear, I'm talking about written useage, not spoken useage, they're often different you know :)

I've heard it since I was a kid in the 70's along with the ones you've listed and a few more like, 4 on the floor, 3 on the tree, slushbox. On the other hand, I can honestly say I have never heardy anyone use the term trans. Maybe a regional thing.

I love pointless threads, they are by far my favorite :D

Like this: Who here knew that GMC was started by a couple Polish guys? Garbrowski (sp) Motor Company :D

Tell me if anybody can relate to this. You know your talking with somebody that has no idea about cars when you pop your trunk and they say "OH ****! YOU GOT NOS!"

And I politely respond with "yep I've got NITROUS"

I get it all the time

guilty!!!! ive called it a tranny 1 or 30 times lol.

oh and smokeurhonda i bet you havent had a honda guy try to explain to you what honda shifting was lol. aparently its just like powershifting its pretty wild. i had to add that to my vocabulary lol.
