royal purple FTMFL.

As some of you may know royal purple sucks and from what I saw today its about the only thing it does well. Iam telling you guys this as warning about thier oils.

About two weeks ago my tranny started shifting wierd. At times it was hard to put into gear and others it was just fine. I figured that my clutch cable was stretched because the the stock adjuster was maxed out. I ended up replacing the cable last night becuase I had to muscle the shifter to make any gear changes. replacing the cable didnt help one bit so i decided to have the tranny fluid changed. I was standing under the car when the tech at pepboys took the drain plug out and OMFG. The tranny fluid was horrible, It seamed to have no viscosity at all, the stuff had the consistancy of WATER no joke and wouldnt even coad my fingers it just rolled of like water. I couldnt believe it. This stuff is total crap. I ended up having the guy replace the fluid with mobil1 :D my tranny shifts really smooth now with no noise at all.

The royal purple was barely in there 20k and now this. I will never use buy this stuff again and when i get back from colorado i will be taking the stuff out of my engine and rear-end.

kinda makes you think that if the tranny fluid is like this what are the diff and engine oils like?

I had some grinding issues out of my old T5 shortly after swapping to RP.

Never had a problem before, and 3 weeks after the swap it started grinding.

It could be by chance...

are you serious i swear by the royal purple stuff. are you sure its not your tranny because these are tremec 3650 trannies lol not the best in the business.

yes iam sure. I wish i had a camera when i drained the oil. I know its hard to believe but it was just like water and as soon as i drove my car it was a 1000 times better. keep in mind that the tranny got harder to shift over time also witch tells me that oil had broken down. also do some searching around and you will find alot of bad stuff about rp.

Don't be too fast to swear on that which you don't do research on. From your point of view the most you can say is it hasn't ruined anything you've used it in. People should stop trusting what ever is most expensive. In my experience Amsoil and Mobil 1 have not disappointed me, and redline for engines. Although i haven't used in tests the new Mobil 1 since they switched getting their oil from the gulf after Katrina

here's the study for diff.'s:
http://www.performanceoiltechnology.com/Gear Lube White Paper.pdf

there's one floating around for the tranny too.

I worked for Royal Petroleum of Nor. Cal. for 3 years and we'd distribute all kinds of different oils. Kendall Co. offers all its distributers free (used) oil analysis, the three samples i myself have sent out of used RP engine oil have all come back "exceeding industry standards of tolerance" Rp performs great in pre-tests like all those charts on the MSDS sheets - but seems to be consistently sub-par after use. And many of these samples were after periods of 2-3k miles.

Plus especially for transmissions, they put additives in there that should never see a transmission - it's not a differential like they are treating it.

Only thing i can suggest from RP is their coolant formula

Any additional info, pm me. I talk about any proprietary specs stuff over the boards.

I've never run anything but RP for the last 5 years in my car. I replaced the clutch last week, and I can tell you the oil that drained out on me was not like water. and it had been in there for atleast a year and a half and 20k.

I've never trusted the Barney oil myself.... Some people swear by it, but if it's such great stuff why don't we see it being accepted by more mainstream sources?

Personally I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. Cobra gets a Mobil 1 synthetic filter in addition to the oil. More high performance cars come with Mobil 1 as a factory fill than any other major synthetic oil. That says a lot to me.

U.M.

Mobil 1 is a factory fill on the following cars:

Lancer Evolution VIII
Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V
Acura RDX
All Porsches'
Mercedes Benz AMG's
Mercedes SLR
Aston Martins
All Chevrolet Corvette's since 1992
Chevrolet SSR
Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
Chrysler 300C SRT-8 and Crossfire SRT-6
Cobalt SS
Dodge Charger SRT-8,
Didge Magnum
Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
Mitsubishi EVO III
Pontiac GTO
Dodge Ram SRT 10
Viper
Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
Saturn Red Line
2000 Cobra "R"

Lets see... I have had grinding in my trans at least a few times a week and the shifting sucked. I have used Motorcraft ATF, Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Valvoline and a few others and nothing stopped the grinding or even reduced it. Nothing worked!!

Sept 2007 I switched to RP Synchromax and since then I have had only 2 occasions in the past 6 months where the car grinded a gear. Shifting is much better as well. That is enough for me to make up my mind.

This is just one of those topics where everyone will have their own opinion.

When the few guys i worked with in distributing/sales had someone come in and ask for a very specific brand or weight and explained how great it was, we just laughed. Opinions are as useful as the the test data they are back up by. We'd time and time again see local Club class builders or drag builders come in, look at all the oil options for 10 mins - then pick the most expensive. We weren't allowed to tell them it's history or limits/tolerances unless they'd ask, but if it was a builder i knew i'd be sure to encourage them to ask:p
If its increased shear-preventing bonds via additives in your tranny help reduce grinding, all the power to you to keep using it. But just be careful making blanket recommendations when you don't know exactly (who does?) what those additives are affecting, or why detergents are even in a tranny.

See Trans VS. Tranny thread. :D

lol i saw that thread after i made the post lol. so shhhhhhhhhhhh :D

but i have run royal purple in my motor for over a year now and royal purple in my tranny for a year and its been shifting better than the day i bought it. i have no clue whats in the rear though its whatever the shop put in it that did my gears.

that rp is crap, i use it in my mustang, tranny and rear, and I its does is make my tranny and rear noise, after a week I switch to regular mercon 3 and its shift smooth. BTW how can you bring your car to pepboy ? its very easy to change fluid on manual.

I dont know about the tranny fluid but I know that a lot of guys at the drag strip swear by the Royal Purple motor oil. Techniqually its racing fluid so I heard it breaks down a lot faster than regular oil. I don't know how true this is but I run the Mobil 1 in my car.

I am still happy with my Valvoline Synthetic blend oil I use, its cheep and at 3K when I change it its still fairly clean and does not seem to lose much viscosity. My tranny was rebuilt abot 20K ago and had Mobile 1 in it and shifts perfect, except reverse which sometimes is hard to get in unless I go to fifth first. Sounds like normal T-45 problems though
I was gona pony up for the RP next change but after this thread I decided I will just stay with the Valvoline. Besides the Valvoline commercial uses a 98 Laser Cobra just like mine so I have to use it :D

Were you running RP ATF or RP manual tranny oil?

I will never trust ATF in a manual tranny, I run RP Synchromax, and have never had a problem so far. Big improvement over the stock fluid.

my .02
