The check engine light in my 89 flickers. It doesnt stay on it just flickers. It usually does it when cruising, when I have the pedal down it doesnt do it.

My '91 used to do that right after an oil change. I never did figure out why and it quit doing it after a while. I never pulled codes to see what it was either. The car never ran bad or got bad mileage, the light just flickered.

If I had to do it all over again (or if it ever starts happening again), I'd do a code scan to see if it stored a code when it lit the light and go from there.

I doubt it, the computer was never programmed to look for oil pressure or gauge function. They'll run with no oil pressure and not throw a code.

The turbo cars had a sensor in the oil pan to check oil level since turbo lubrication was critical. I don't know if they carried that over to the naturally aspirated cars or not. The turbo cars were last produced in '88 so while it's not impossible, it's unlikely that your car has such a sensor. If it's there you can't miss it. It'll be right in the side of the oil pan at the sump.
