Would someone please provide a detailed step-by-step procedure on how to remove the column lock (key) cylinder on a 72 mustang? Keys are stuck and the cylinder will not rotate back to the "off" position for removal. Thanks!

To remove the lock cylinder, disconnect the battery, remove the steering wheel (You will have to have a steering wheel puller, removethe turn signal switch handle (This will unscrew if you use a pair of adjustable plyers on the flat spot near the bottom of the handle) Unscrew and remove the turn signal/hazard switch ( There are three screws holding it in place and one screw holding the key in sensor) gently slide the switch out of the colume casting. Now you will see the upper colume casting that holds the lock cylinder. At the bottom of the cylinder part of the casting you will see a pin hole into the lock cylinder. Turn the key to the start position and use an end of a paper clip into the pin hole to press and release the lock from the casting. You should be able to pull the lock out. I'm checking my books but I'm pretty sure the key must be in the start position inorder to release the pin holding the cylinder in place. I'll keep checking, but I just did this last week and can't remember off the top of my head (LOL)

Good luck!

Thanks...I'll try the procedure today. Once I do get the cylinder out could it be repaired? If not, and I buy a new cylinder could a locksmith key it the same as the doors? I'd hate to have to replace those too.
